Do you think Field would've won last year? Anne seems unstoppable. But, hey, Field could win (probably wont though).

Nah, even if she was competing last year, I don't think she would've won. Sally Field of all people doesn't strike me as someone who would win three Oscars.

It's interesting to think about Lincoln competing last year though. I think it would have had Picture and Actor in the bag. Maybe Director. But how weird would it be to have DDL and Streep win their third Oscars on the same night?

Nah. Field couldn't have beaten out Spencer last year. If Les Mis was moved to next year, I'd think Field would be the frontrunner here. It'd be Field vs. Hunt I guess..

    Will Oscar have Riva Fever?

Finally saw this tonight. I agree about the screenplay. Simply brilliant. I read Goodwin's book 4 years ago, and have been v interested in this subject. The cast was superb. I like DDL, but for some reasons I didn't think I was going to like him in this after I saw the trailer, and I was wrong. He was... brilliant. TLJ and Field were also standouts.

There was applause at the end of the movie. The audience loved it.

If the Deadline forecast is accurate, LINCOLN has a shot this 5 day weekend (and even 3 day weekend) of outgrossing RISE OF THE GUARDIANS.

    I like that.
    Movies recently reviewed by RRA:

    Star Trek (2009)
    Pain & Gain (2013)
    Oblivion (2013)
    Jurassic Park III (2001)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

The New RRA: Less Spam, still 100% ruining AD.

God, I really wish Field a chance at upsetting (I think she really does a lot with the limited screen time she had). But there's really no stopping The Hathaway

I just tell myself this: there's no way Hathaway's speech can be as smug and entitled as Julia Roberts'.

So it won't be the most painful thing I've seen.

And I loved her in Dark Night Rises, so whatever. Good year for her.

Yes to this. Loved, loved, loved her in TDKR. So much fun and no starvation involved. Hell, give her the Oscar! She had a great year! Helen and Sally don't need another one. And you know.....we are going to love a little smugness for years to come. Oh, the gifs!

I thought this was overall pretty great, but I agree that it should've ended with Lincoln leaving the white house. The audiences knows what happens anyways. I also didn't really appreciate the fake-out scene.

DDL is spectacular. Totally deserves to win his third. The ensemble was flawless, I don't think there was a weak link. Even guys like James Spader and Lee Pace who aren't getting TLJ levels of attention were pretty amazing.

I think this is about as good as an Oscar film can be.

I thought we had hit the hyperbole ceiling a while ago but that's certainly a new one.

    Unless you mean "Oscar bait"?

Yes. Obviously there are many, many movies that can or do win Oscars that are better than Lincoln, but this is about as good as Oscar-bait can be, I think. Which means this is outstanding, and could be recommended to anyone I know, but is not transcendent ala The Master, The Tree of Life, etc

Instead of silencing the orchestra like Julia, she can command them to back her while she sings "There's No Business Like Show Business" after her speech and gesture for the audience to stand up and sing along. MacFarlane approaches and attempts to join her but she elbows him out of the way. Then an enraged Amy Adams hits her in the head with a compact mirror thrown from the seats.

Got it. And if this had been written by Steven Zaillian instead of Kushner it would have been even baitier!

I usually avoid the serious history buff and am not a big fan of Spielberg's work from the last decade. However this one really blows me away with its excellent storytelling, and equally impressive ensemble cast. This has to be the best acted major Hollywood release for the last 10 years or even more. I actually prefer DDL here to his towering (but somewhat overacting) work in Gangs of New York and TWBB. If he wins a third acting Oscar, I will have to say that he, along with Vivien Leigh, are two of the few actors/actresses who totally deserve every Oscar as multiple winners. TLJ is just amazing and certainly the best supporting performance, regardless of gender, that I have seen this year. Sally Field won't win her third on her third nom even if she was brilliant in her limited role. The odds are totally against her.

Saw this yesterday. Some terrific moments. I especially love the revelation with Tommy Lee Jones. DDL was excellent. Subtle compared to his other work, frankly. Not sure it would be MY Best Picture of the Year. It's "great", but I guess I wasn't knocked out by it in a way I would like...but biographical movies rarely ever do knock me out for some reason.

I can see a lot of this film fading with time to me as another historical Oscar film, but my god, everything about DDL and the Lincoln characterization in this film is 100% magic. The performance, his stories, the way the pressure on him is dealt with restraint wise, etc.

DDL and the script are the stars here. Magical script and dialog.

Saw this again, and the showing at Lincoln Square was filled except for the first row. Had to sit next to this old woman who had the worst breath, and silently burped so much.

I know it's a miniscule detail, but I really liked the shawls some of the characters wore. I don't know why I liked that costume choice so much. I also wish the dream sequence was longer.

I finally saw this and so I can weigh in:

My two biggest issues with the movie were the overly heavy-handed prologue and ending. I sound like a broken record, but ending it with Lincoln leaving for the theater would have been so perfect.

Those two things aside, this was an excellent movie, a fantastic ensemble piece where the script and the acting by almost everyone involved made it so that even characters that were barely on screen felt distinct and memorable ( I say almost because Field did nothing for me at all). I also loved the way the script balanced humor with the heavy stuff so that it almost never felt too overbearing and had great dialogue.

DDL was excellent in the lead, of course. He proved wrong those who say he can only play super-intense characters, his Lincoln is very different from his Plainview or Bill the Butcher, someone who plays at being the absentminded professorial type but in reality is far more of a savvy game-player. Tommy Lee Jones was every bit his match in their scenes together as well. I may prefer the Phoenix/Hoffman pair, but if these two end up taking home the gold instead they will be more than worthy. That goes for the movie as a whole, it won't be my personal winner for a lot of things (except maybe ensemble), but I will be happy in the knowledge the the pile of trophies it wins will be richly deserved.
