I very much enjoyed this. It's not going to be my favorite film of the year (well, it will be hard for anything to top The Master), but when it wins 500 Oscars, I won't really complain. I appreciated its restraint, outside of a few sequences, and Kushner's script is remarkable.

I, too, join the James Spader fan club, though I was also taken with David Strathairn.

This was pretty good. I think I'm mostly on board with Scarmi's take. The music was often sort of awful and distracting. I liked all the political stuff, though!

It's weird Williams made a perfect Americana score for JFK without having the problem he does here. You'd think this would be the easier project.

I didn't even notice the music the vast majority of the time. Distracting is about the last word I'd use. It was a bit like SPR - which only had about 25 minutes of music too.

Quick thoughts: Some gorgeous moments, some undeniable Spielberg affectations, DDL was flawless, TLJ was fantastic, much funnier than I expected, Sally Field was a hot fucking mess (and about 20 years too old for this).

And Mary Todd Lincoln was a hot fucking mess, so I thought the casting was perfect.

Field gained 25 pounds for this, so I applaud her dedication for sure. I just didn't like her very much for this. I'm not sure if there was anything, for me, that she could have done differently though. If she had been more M'Lynn at Shelby's gravesite I'm sure it would have looked like the worst scenery-chewing overacting. But I almost think this role needed a bit more of that. She was oddly subdued, especially for Sally Field.

She should have played all the parts Eddie Murphy style.

Don't you think I didn't notice that last nomination you tried to slip in. It still won't happen no matter how many times you predict it.

What makes it any different from recent nominations for King's Speech, Social Network, or Moneyball? I haven't seen Lincoln yet, but I doubt those movies are much showier than this movie is.

You can hem and haw and cackle all you want, McTurkey, but it doesn't make you right. You are WRONG, sir, and I will be vindicated on Oscar nomination morning while you cry to your abuela about how that mean erikdean is always right and that you are not.

This year the category is much stronger, mainly, but those three also had very showy sound moments/techniques. At least showier than using the sound of Lincoln's real clock.

But if I'm wrong, it will have been worth it to read that Erikdean post about my abuela, LMAO!

Spielberg dispatched a team to find other sounds that surrounded Lincoln in his final days. They collected the ring of the bell at the church Lincoln attended, the squeak of latches at the White House, the snatch of Lincoln’s carriage door, the weight of boots as a weary Lincoln walked through the White House, the creak of a seat from which he rose.
