Best Director nominee of the 80s not nominated for Best Picture

Looking at the Best Director nominees of the 80s, there were 12 films nominated for Best Director and not Best Picture. With only 12 nominees, there probably won't be much difference on who the top choices will be (so I'll leave out the poll), but who do you think is the best of the nominees?

So rate them, rank them, whatever, who do you think was most worthy of the nomination and do you think the film should have beeen nominated for Best Picture as well (and if so, what should have been taken out).

1980 Richard Rush - The Stunt Man
1982 Wolfgang Petersen - Das Boot
1983 Ingmar Bergman - Fanny and Alexander
    1983 Micke Nichols - Silkwood
1984 Woody Allen - Broadway Danny Rose
    1985 Akira Kurosawa - Ran
1986 David Lynch - Blue Velvet
1987 Lasse Hallstrom - My Life as a Dog
1988 Charles Chrichton - A Fish Called Wanda
1988 Martin Scorsese - The Last Temptation of Christ
1989 Woody Allen - Crimes and Misdemeanors
    1989 Kenneth Branagh - Henry V

This will be about the only time ever I’ll rank anything Kurosawa-related to anything Bergman-related. But yeah, Ran (and Kuro’s direction) > F&A

    1- Kurosawa
    2- Bergman
    3- Allen (Crimes & Misdemeanors)
    4- Lynch
5- Allen (Broadway Danny Rose) – love this movie –
    6- Branagh
    7- Chrichton

    Not seen the others.

You rank first the one to scandalously sit Spielberg out of the 1985 race, despite 10 nods for The Color Purple! Yay!

    11 nods.

And Kurosawa deserved the win, let alone the nomination.
