That's pretty much exactly where I expected this to land, so I don't think it means much. It's not like this seriously had any chances outside of Actor and Actress anyway (And even the latter seems extremely unlikely now). I'll be keeping Mirren in my predictions unless precursors start snubbing her (Like, isn't it required by the Academy to have at least one actress from a thoroughly mediocre film nominated every year?).

Most of you will think The Impossible is a thoroughly mediocre film, so no worries about that.

No, actually it's required that the WINNER comes from a thoroughly mediocre film.

Anyway, I'm no good at predicting or crunching numbers, but ... Dame Mirren is sooo much better than wee Wallis, or Lawrence, or Dame Watts () ... about on par with Maggie ... but all pale next to Cotillard's raw performance. Sadly, many even better performances will not so much as be considered (see Aurelius' siggie for a start).

Yeah, I really don't think she's happening. She's obviously not out of the race or anything but nods for such weak films are quite rare, and usually there's another factor, like Close with her narrative last year, and campaigning of course.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.

As I said, in the Best Actress thread, nominations and even wins for such poorly reviewed films have not been that uncommon in this category, especially as of late.

Yeah, I still think Mirren would make perfect British filler in this year's Best Actress race. She's Helen Mirren. I don't think these mixed reviews are all that damning to her chances, especially when she's got a big Oscar scene in the film for people to go gaga over.

Glenn, Meryl, and Cate have all had films in that range as well...and were all nominated. This year is not that stacked that Helen Mirren still can't get in, with those kinds of reviews.

    Thumbs down

Yes but Helen Mirren is in a borderline supporting performance and she hasn't been doing any campaigning so far. Glen put on a massive campaign last year and even Meryl did a bit of campaigning for The Iron Lady. I sense that she really wanted to win. Other hopefuls that aren't locks or strong bets like Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard ect are campaigning and getting their names out there which is necessary. Ironically Scarlett has been doing more promotion than any of the two actually in contention for nominations. I'd feel more confident in Mirren if she was actually putting herself out there but nothing so far. That combined with the disappointing box office so far... I'm dropping her from my predictions. I think she'll be ignored everywhere except for BAFTA this year.

Just to echo clearwatergirl - Glenn, Meryl and Cate all had undeniable star-turn leading roles as the Queen of England, Margaret Thatcher and a transvestite. Mirren is playing 'the wife....
