Not a single bad nominee (though Cromwell is odd).

Great year, with the exception of one of the absolute worst Best Actor wins (despite him otherwise being one of my favorite actors)

    ACTOR--RICHARD DREYFUSS (MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS)
Kevin Bacon (Murder in the First)
    Johnny Depp (Don Juan DeMarco)
    Robert Downey, Jr. (Restoration)
    Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking)

    ACTRESS--NICOLE KIDMAN (TO DIE FOR)
    Kathy Bates (Dolores Claiborne)
    Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking)
Elizabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas)(she was great... it was the rest of the movie that was terrible!)
Sharon Stone (Casino, The Quick and the Dead)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS--FAMKE JANSEN (GOLDENEYE) (poor woman, she obviously much preferred doing serious drama, yet she was so much better in stuff like this)
    Angela Bassett (Strange Days)
Tara Fitzgerald (The Englishman who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain)
    Jessica Lange (Rob Roy)
    Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite)

SUPPORTING ACTOR--KEVIN SPACEY (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, 7, SWIMMING WITH SHARKS, OUTBREAK)
    Ed Harris (Apollo 13)
    Patrick Macgoohan (Braveheart)
    Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys)
    Tim Roth (Rob Roy)

    ENSEMBLE--THE USUAL SUSPECTS
    Apollo 13
    The Birdcage
    Crimson Tide
    Sense and Sensibility

Having to choose between Streep and Sarandon is the worst thing in the world, ugh.

You know it's a great year when great contenders don't get nominated, yet you really can't complain given who was nominated. Sure Poitier got screwed in 1967 when he gave three of his best performances in IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, TO SIR WITH LOVE, and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, yet when Newman, Hoffman, Steiger, Tracy, and Beatty also gave the performances of their careers, you can't complain too much.

Ditto to Nicole Kidman in TO DIE FOR... when you've got one of the best Best Actress line-ups ever. Supporting Actor is awesome, too.

Supporting Actor is the only one that I can comment on because I've seen all of the nominees except Tim Roth. Of the other four, I'd say Pitt is the best.
    Recently watched films:
    A History of Violence - ***1/2
    The Flat - **
    Upstream Color - ***1/2
    Man of Steel - **1/2
    The Ascent - *****

Would like to see Leigh and Kidman to replace Stone and Thompson/Sarandon in the actress lineup.
