I guess there should be more 3D movies every year for that to happen, but frankly, I'd love it. They're totally different animals, and I think it unfair to compare them. Plus, people tend to value the technical difficulty and technical achievement more than the expressive/artistic achievement of a 2D cinamatography. Not saying the former precludes the later and vice-versa, and I in fact like a lot the last 3D cinematography wins, but I think they have different easthetic and technical values that, by now, should be taken to different categories.

I had about zero interest in this until I read the novel while in Europe and basically bawled my effing eyes out and loved every single page of it...and then I saw that PG rating and knew they fucked something up and I'm afraid that this is going to skew WAY TOO inspirational for me. I mean, the novel is borderline perfect.

My friend who saw it says they really pushed the PG rating, and couldn't believe it wasn't PG-13.

Well, here's a list of live-action movies that were filmed for 3D released in the U.S. in 2012 (Not counting conversions) and their Metacritic scores:

    Underworld: Awakening (39)
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (41)
    Piranha 3DD (24)
    Prometheus (65)
    The Amazing Spider-Man (66)
    Step Up Revolution (43)
    Resident Evil: Retribution (39)
    Dredd (59)
    Silent Hill: Revelation (15)
    Life of Pi (90)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (TBD)

So with literally only a couple exceptions, it seems like actually shooting in 3D has become reserved only for cheapo action/horror movies. So at least until even big-budget movies start shooting in 3D instead of just converting to it, it'll be a while before we actually see this come to pass, probably.

Hmm, that's very interesting. If Life of Pi wins, it would be the third 3D film to win in four years. Additionally, I'm predicting it to win Visual Effects, and that would make Cinematography/VFX match up for four years in a row.

I could see them eventually splitting Cinematography into two categories, but I think it would take a number of years.

Oh, this is PG instead of PG-13? Well, at least this means Dirk can give up with saying this will win BP now

I feel the same way. I actually thought this could turn out to be complete crap, based on the first pics, trailer... But it's Ang Lee. That was irrational.
I know I've got a big ego, I really don't know why it's such a big deal, though.

    PG? I've always known this.

Hugo ALMOST won. PG doesn't change anything.

That's a really cool idea, Jonathan. As you said later in this thread, if it happens, it's probably a ways off, but like McT, I'd be all for this. I can't get enough of the tech awards and would love an additional Cinematography category in the mix. I guess the other factor to consider (other than lack of quality candidates at this point) is IMAX cinematography. More and more DPs/directors are opting to go that direction and while it's still a pretty small group, the numbers are growing. True IMAX photography wouldn't be eligible for 3D-ish-ness, so then it would be left in the 2D category, where if it dominated would just create another level of annoyance to old-school DPs not trying out the super-sized cameras. Anyways, it'll be fun to see what happens either way.

Lol. A negative Red Dawn review was added to the Life of Pi rottentoamtoes page.

Also, went up to an 89 BFCA score.

Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

A PG film has never won BP. That precedent isn't being set this year, especially not with Oscar bait like Lincoln and Argo in the mix.

    LOL.

What do you have against the film? This film is pure Oscar bait.

Nothing, I'm excited for it. It's called being realistic, something you as an Oscar predictor know little about.

Also, Driving Ms. Daisy was rated PG.

Look at you. Getting all defensive and trying to insult me? You're not being realistic in the very least.

wov, stop having wishful thinking. You have no idea what you're talking about when it comes toward this film.

Everything about this is pure Oscar bait, and it will have audience & critical support. You all are underestimating it.

    1) I'm not "having wishful thinking", or being defensive. I said I'm excited for the film, and I love Ang Lee.
    2) Don't talk to me about "being realistic". I feel confident that this film isn't winning BP (even if I'm not 100% positive, since I can't tell the future). I think that's a realistic prediction, especially with Argo and Lincoln in the mix, and Les Mis not having even dropped yet.
    3) What do you care if I don't think this isn't winning BP? Stop coming at me for it. I'm not denying that Daniel Day-Lewis is getting nominated or something.
