I have to imagine that Justified will show up again in some Drama categories. It's won an acting Emmy two years running.

  2. #82
I have Justified getting Jeremy Davies in Guest Actor again. I forgot to post my guest predictions, so here they are. I feel somewhat good about my drama guests, but I feel really weak on the comedy guests this fall, I don't even have enough of an idea to list alternates. Anyone have an idea who the comedy guests with buzz have been this season?

    Drama Guest Actor

    1. Jeremy Davies, Justified
    2. Michael J. Fox, The Good Wife
    3. Nathan Lane, The Good Wife
    4. Ben Feldman, Mad Men (if he isn't upgraded to a regular)
    5. Ray Stevenson, Dexter
    6. Rupert Friend, Homeland

    7. Patton Oswalt, Justified
    8. Ray Romano, Parenthood
    9. Robert Morse, Mad Men
    10. Matthew Perry, The Good Wife
    11. James Cromwell, Boardwalk Empire
    12. William Daniels, Grey's Anatomy

    Drama Guest Actress

    1. Shirley Maclaine, Downton Abbey
    2. Jane Fonda, The Newsroom
    3. Martha Plimpton, The Good Wife
    4. Margo Martindale, The Americans
    5. Marin Ireland, Homeland
    6. Alison Brie, Mad Men (I predict this season will feature the breakup of the Campbell marriage, which will give her some highlight actressing moments to get in)

    7. Loretta Devine, Grey's Anatomy
    8. Jennifer Hudson, Smash
    9. Alfre Woodard, Private Practice
    10. Stockard Channing, The Good Wife
    11. Dianna Rigg, Game of Thrones
    12. Yvonne Strahovski, Dexter

    Comedy Guest Actor

    1. Bryan Cranston, 30 Rock
    2. Louis CK, Saturday Night Live
    3. Matthew Broderick, Modern Family
    4. Henry Winkler, Arrested Development
    5. David Lynch, Louie
    6. Rob Reiner, New Girl

    Comedy Guest Actress

    1. Melissa Leo, Louie
    2. Catherine O'Hara, 30 Rock
    3. Jamie Lee Curtis, New Girl
    4. Anne Hathaway, Saturday Night Live
    5. Liza Minnelli, Arrested Development
    6. Elaine Strich, 30 Rock

Ya'll better recognize this HBIC right here:

Also, from the prestigious A.V. Club (love it; couldn't have said it better):

In some ways, this season has turned into a battle of the wills between the showrunners and Lange, the former trying to see how much misery they can dump on her character and the latter trying to express that with a certain amount of dignity and grace.
There’s a type of storytelling I hate, called misery porn, which essentially amounts to writers dumping awful stuff on their characters because they can’t figure out how to drive the story throughthose characters. Ryan Murphy has been guilty of this in the past on Nip/Tuck, especially, and there’s every chance the Passion of Sister Jude could have fallen into this pattern as well. Instead, because the miseries heaped upon the woman have been so plentiful and because Lange has so committed to the idea of a woman who’s been slowly dragged down by the madness around her, inside her, and inflicted upon her, the whole thing has worked, heading straight past misery porn and on into straight-out operatic fantasia.

The thing about guest noms is they they will always throw in people just cause they are vets or A-List stars for otherwise unnoteworthy walk on parts. I fully excpect for example Robin Williams to get nominated for Louie.

I definitely agree with almost all this although I think New Girls is far more likely to get a nod ahead of VP and even Louie and Matthew Perry will get a Best Actor nom and knock out Cheadle,LeBlanc or Bateman.

Perry should have gotten a Golden Globe nod very easily. The fact that he didn't makes me think that he won't get in at the Emmys.

The Globes and Emmys have just no overlap, though? They operate in entirely different spheres or awfulness.

This year all five Globe nominees had been previously nominated at the Emmys though. And Perry should have been much more in the Globe sphere than, say, Louis CK.

OMG If Perry gets another nomination that's another Friends cast member to get nominated over Cox. She really should've gotten nominated for that first season of Cougar Town.

Perry has already been nominated for an Emmy before. Multiple times.

Yes, four of the five non-Cox Friends have not only been nominated for that show when she wasn't but have been nominated for other shows as well: Aniston for 30 Rock, Kudrow for The Comeback, LeBlanc for Episodes and Perry for The West Wing.

I'm convinced Cox must have killed TV academy members' puppies or something.

I was shocked when Schwimmer didn't get back in for 30 Rock as well.

Eh. Cox was funny on Friends, but there was never really a season where she was the standout or better than her co-stars, and since the show was never that embraced by the Emmys (it had a weird run, being repeatedly dropped then embraced again), it wasn't crazy that a coattail nod for her didn't happen. And Cougar Town just never had the buzz after the initial poor reaction.

From what I could tell looking back (I was a little kid in the mid-90s so take this with a grain of salt) Kudrow had the showier performance with more critical acclaim back then, and Aniston was the media darling/star in the making, so Cox kind of got lost in the shuffle. Now she looks great because she's on a critically well-liked show, while Aniston has been thoroughly backlashed and Kudrow has faded into obscurity (I mean Web Therapy. Same difference.)

Well, yeah. Kudrow was their darling for a long time (the show's only nomination in seasons three and four, and she won for a nothing performance), but otherwise the show never did that well. It even took Aniston until season 6 to break in.

I remember a lot of people thought Courteney Cox was going to get in for the final season. There seemed to be a buzz that she had gone 10 years being the only 'Friend' not nominated and she was strong in the final season during the adoption storyline.

I think Matthew Perry stands a strong shot at a nomination for Go On. I am surprised the Globes snubbed him, though. That seems like it should/would have been an easy nomination.

  18. #98
Go On has no buzz or critical support, and it's not like Two and a Half Men where it's enough of a hit in the ratings for that to not matter.

Dockery will not get into Lead Actress if she's submitted there. McGovern had more to do this season and I'd predict her. Dockery will struggle in supporting.
