Well I'm just about ready to reneg on that prediction. I'm still very excited about 48 fps though and I'll definitely line up to go see it.

Audiences and critics were so in sync on the trilogy, that I thought the case would be the same here. But it looks like we may see a split with this one.
I never thought the 48fps gamble would pay off (I'm still intent on seeing it in 24fps 2D first), but it still makes me sad to see this reaction:

Good to very good is how I describe the original trilogy, so this isn't a big deal to me. I never really saw what made those movies special to so many people.

Glad I bought my ticket for 24 fps. Don't want to be potentially distracted by HFR on (probably) first viewing.
Same here. I've never been on board with Pete's decision to try out this new tech on The Hobbit, but I'll give it a chance - on my second viewing. On December 14, however, I just want to return to Middle Earth as I left it.
Yeah, I'm not even crazy about seeing it in 3D.
I think it will be 2D, 24fps for me as well. Though as far as artist intent is concerned, I imagine it should be experienced at some point to give it a fair shake.

I agree, the comparison to RINGS is always going to be there. Bitching of the fact that it is goofy or not has heavy as RINGS. I wonder did they ever read the books. Eventhough, the book is for Children( there was always a dark side to once Hobbits, I meam Dwarves hit the road) I still love reading actual reviews from critics one way or the other( I frankly think that they are more intersted in the new look of the movie over the movie itself.). I still think that they will really like the movies( maybe not as much as RINGS) but over all the movies will be a great success. & The movies are for us fans.

Yeah, this isn't good.
I highly doubt this will be getting out of the 60s on MC, and Rotten Tomatoes isn't much promising. Out of 222 reviews The Two Towers had only 9 rottens, while is already up to 4 out of 14.
Man, who would have ever thought that making a nearly three-hour theatrical release out of the first 100 pages of a light children's film would not go over well with non-fanboys?!

I'm going to a screening of this on Monday night. My friend is so excited because he said something about the screening being "40 or 48 such and such..." Something about the camera he was going on and on about.
Anyway. I'm glad the reviews aren't terrible, but I honestly expected them to be a little better than they are.
McCarthy is usually right in the middle of critical response. not out of the 60's sounds right. I'll probably love it, fan-boy that I am.

Well, reviews should be better than Lovely Bones. Though I'll always be grateful for that movie getting Saoirse another Bafta nom.

Kirk Honeycutt's review seems very fair and about what I expected. I'll be quite happy if the the tone is as jolly and frivolous as it seems to be as itt will get plenty dark and grim by the final chapter of the tale with all the surrounding death(s) and destruction.
The worst part of this is that it was entirely avoidable.
Just saw 6 additional clips on EW. & I couldn't help my self by laugh. the Clip with Smegol & Bilbo was amazing. I always wished that there was more smegol in the book. I can never get enough of that guy, can't help but love him

I LOVED the clips (though I'm holding off on the Riddles in the Dark clip - I don't want that spoiled). After a getting a little concerned due to the divisive reviews, the clips have me smiling ear to ear again. Maybe these films will be catering more to fans than the previous ones, but so be it. But the reviews critique the length of the film, and the bloat, not the quality of the parts that should be there. Meaning the reviews indicate the clips should be good.
...and if PJ released the Extended Cuts of LotR into theaters instead of the Theatricals, I'm sure critics would have called those bloated too. But I love them, so I'm not concerned here.
