I love coming upon twitter convos like this

@thePlaylist I don't believe its been stressed enough how terrific and ravishing Anna Karenina is. Gorgeous.

    david ehrlich:
@ThePlaylist i'm 1,300 words into stressing that right now, cause that's what i do. i stress.

    ThePlaylist:
@davidehrlich excellent. Why is there not more oscar talk? I would take it a million times over Lincoln.

    david ehrlich:
@ThePlaylist really couldn't tell you. lack of buzz is mystifying. on audacity alone it could resonate with audiences when it opens.

    ThePlaylist:
@davidehrlich mystifying is a good way to put it.
Here's hoping - big box office would certainly be a welcome boost. But I'm not counting on it after the UK box office response.

The UK response has been quite satisfactory. It spent over a month in the top 10 and have grossed about 8 million I believe. The UK is a small market, so i don't think anyone was expecting massive numbers for a period piece like Anna K. The true test will be how well it does overseas. It needs good word of mouth, like P&P and Atonement, and an effective campaign by FF to do well.

Is there an embargo for U.S. Critics?

Pretty sure there isn't since it screened at Toronto, most the US Critics attended the festival and have written their reviews already. Though I've noticed a few more have popped up in the past 24 hours.

With a film like this, to get the impressive box office receipts it really needs the support of critics - response to P&P and Atonement was ecstatic and that was reflected in the fact they made over $20 million, while Anna K only managed $8.5 million. Word of mouth was pretty good from what I hear - audiences were dazzled (very small drop 1st week to 2nd to 3rd), the trailer and marketing were great, but mixed critic response probably kept people away. I'm worried this might get torn at by American critics like they did with Cloud Atlas... and that well may make audiences stay away.

right now I'm thinking between $20 mill - $30 mill US? (I hope I'm wrong and makes at least double that.)

LOL, The Iron Lady made only $30 million in the US box office, and that was starring MERYL STREEP in the Oscar BEST ACTRESS WINNER. Anna Karenina will be lucky to make half of that.

Ehh, Joe Wright films typically do well. Even the shitty Soloist made $31 million at the US http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=joewright.htm

Nobody said this was going to break box office records. What sort of helps it is that it's based on a classic novel, and stars the period piece actress of our time so there is bound to be some interest.

I say this grossed around 50 to 60million tops.
