Every other word that Samuel L. Jackson's mouth these days is an expletive. It's kinda worn thin.

Martin Short was great, especially his monologue. They need to get him back as often as they get Alec Baldwin.
Too bad Stefon didn't show, though!
I have to admit I was not looking forward to this SNL. The combination of Martin Short/Paul McCartney didn't seem all that inspiring. I love Paul but I just could not get excited about this. But I think it turned out those two were just right. The opening with the choir was beautiful. Short was terrific all night. His monologue song worked (and I tend to find most monologue songs a bore). The sketches such as The Bennett brothers and the assistant to the Royal family were silly but Short did a fantastic job with them. The Actors Studio doing "You're A Rat Bastard, Charlie Brown" got funnier as it went on with Hader's Charlie (as played by Al Pacino) and McKinnon's Lucy (as played by Edie Falco) cursing each other out after she pulls the football being the highlight. Pretty sure Jackson only said "Fuh" but he definitely said "bullshit." Macca's sang two of my least favorite songs of his. Still the rendention of "My Valentine" (a song that I am anything but a big fan of) was the perfect set up for the 2nd performance in which he, Grohl, Novoselic and Smear just kicked ass. McCartney on his cigar box guitar with Grohl on drums right behind him - magic. Love watching Grohl on drums.
The entirety of the last act was perfect. Starting with Martin Short and Paul McCartney's sketch was played perfectly by both to the walls going off to the side to McCartney singing with the choir - again just what was needed. And I don't care for "Wonderful Christmas Time". I always felt bad for Paul that his Christmas standard was cheesy and John Lennon had knocked his Christmas standard out of the park (I love both but in that one area I think John really trumped Paul). And yet tonight it again felt right. For the first time in listening to that song, it brought a smile to my face. Short and McCartney performed their heart out and made for something delightful at a difficult time.
I was reading Matt Zoller Seitz's tweets on it and thought he eloquently put it into terms the essence of McCartney tonight.
They showed the expletives on the West Coast, which REALLY shocked me - usually those are taken out for us. We can't have the naughty language!
I always love when old SNL players come back. They seem to reinvigorate the proceedings at 30 Rock, and this was no exception. My only gripe is that we didn't get to see Tom Hanks and Jimmy Fallon again after the monologue. They should have Hanks host instead of JLaw in January. I don't care that Cloud Atlas tanked.
Did you notice Joe Walsh on guitar on "BMV"?
As a Beatles fan, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of "Christmastime" either and you're right it's cheesy for better or for worse. For me it walks the fine line between bad and so cheesy bad its good. But this is the time of year for such a song, and one can't forget it was a hit for him back in the day. I remember reading somewhere once that because he wrote/played/produced the track by himself, he gets almost half a million yearly in royalties from the holiday radio airplay.

Ok, I just watched this episode.
First of all... is Jennifer Lawrence really the next host? Her episode is a month away. Are they really not going to have another new episode for a month? Usually they have a new episode the first or second Saturday after New Years.
Anyway, as with any musical guest of Paul's standing, I never really look forward to these episodes because they always include 3 or 4 performances, which takes away from the amount of sketches we get. But this was a solid enough episode, so I didn't mind.
And by the way, if you're wondering what got cut... Patricia Clarkson was there, and her sketch got cut. She still attended the after party though. I wonder if maybe they cut her sketch as to have enough time for an extra McCartney performance? I don't know..
My only gripe is... I wanted an Ed Grimley sketch. It was nice to see a bit of him in the monologue (easily one of the best monologues in a long time), but I wanted a full sketch. In 1984, Grimley met Ringo Starr... how cool would it have been for him to meet Paul?
Its interesting how few recurring characters/impressions Short brought out. I thought that was refreshing.
Again, Vanessa Bayer outdid herself as the bar mitzvah boy. She is slowly carving herself a quirky niche. About time!

I laughed really hard at that diner skit for some reason.
I see some irony in playing a promo for Nicholas Hoult's movie during SNL.
The diner skit was good. Lumineers
