That probably won't last very long.
Thrift Shop breaks 400k to a new high.
Also: "Harlem Shake" debuts at No. 3 on Digital Songs with 262,000 (up 1,359% from 18,000). Wow, that was a really fast phenomenon. Up 244k in one week.
Comparable: +231k in a week Somebody That I Used to Know. +228k in a week We Are Young.
"Year to date track sales are at 200.41 million, down 1% compared to the same total at this point last year (202.78 million)." - I guess digital sales have hit their peak?

HUGE NEWS. The newest component to the Hot 100 is...Youtube! And it's making a HUGE impact already.
Harlem Shake is the official #1 song in America. Even though Thrift Shop sold 150k more, and has 109 mil more radio impressions. I have no idea how the new formula is, in terms of how many Youtube views = how many downloads = how many radio impressions, etc. The Hot 100 is going to be way more unpredictable. It also seems VERY hard to quantify how many views a song gets. Like, is every Youtube video that uses a song counted? So if I made a video of myself singing Thrift Shop and a hundred people watched it, would that count? Or if I played it in the background while I danced around? Or are official VEVO account videos going to count way more? What if someone puts up a video that plays like half of one song and half of another, mash-up style - would that count for both songs?
On-Demand Songs was a much more straightforward addition (as are digital sales, and radio impressions): Mostly, they just ask Spotify how many times each song was streamed.
And I SEE that they changed the rules not for the Asian artist's song but for this white dude who's a "DJ" rather than what I would label a musical artist.
And Queen Rebecca Black totally would've had a #1 song! Friday>>>Harlem Shake. Partying, partying, yeah - Whoo. Con los terroristas. Ey Ey Ey Ey Ey Ey - Boo.

This would make me really angry if Harlem Shake wasn't already on its way to being passe.
How furious is PSY? He would've been #1 forever with this formula.
Or Justin Bieber?! Or Lady Gaga?!
I don't know if I should commend Billboard for finally trying to keep up with the times or be mad at them for changing the rules so late in the game. I am still enraged at them for that one time where "Blackout" was going to debut at #1 on the Hot 200 and then they suddenly decided that some random Wal-Mart only CD was eligible.

And, I really can't complain about this new formula change. I'm actually glad they are trying to be up to date.
"Now my life is sweet like cinnamon..."
I have no issue with them counting YouTube, just one step closer to catching up with the times. Better late than never.
Youtube is basically how I listen to all my music so I actually have an impact on the charts now, lol.
I am going to start leaving Youtube windows open on repeat for my favorite songs.
Maybe I get Phillip Phillips another 40 weeks in the Top 10.

Yeah, The Eagles' first studio album in 28 years, so random and irrelevant...
The charts can't just not change ever because it's "unfair" that some earlier act doesn't get to benefit. Well, I suppose Billboard could never change the rules but that would be stupid. I kind of like these sneak changes to the charts because it gives the labels less time to strategize.
If a Walmart CD is outselling everything that week, what does that say about the other artists?
Exactly. Britbrit didn't deserve #1.![]()
Will Oscar have Riva Fever?
I think, by waiting 28 years, they only further proved how irrelevant they were!
Also, how could you waste one of your 44 posts by blaspheming one of AwardsDaily's greatest musical icons?!

Like if Britney had been outsold more than 2-to1 by a Target or iTunes exclusive, her fans would've been cool with her getting blocked from the top of the chart...
So was the rule about catalog albums not being able to appear on the Billboard 200 again once they had fallen too low on the chart. They finally had to change that one after Michael Jackson died and was selling the most albums in the country for weeks but the Billboard 200 didn't reflect that. It's a good thing box office reporting never worked that way.
Wow. This is pretty crazy. I suppose it's a good thing, but it's just kind of shocking.
Anyway, with "Stay" rocketing to #3, Rihanna has her 24th top ten hit, passing Whitney Houston and The Rolling Stones.
The top ten looks like this:
1. Harlem Shake - Baauer
2. Thrift Shop - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz
3. Stay - Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko
4. Scream & Shout - will.i.am featuring Britney Spears
5. I Knew You Were Trouble - Taylor Swift
6. Ho Hey - The Lumineers
7. Locked Out of Heaven - Bruno Mars
8. When I Was Your Man - Bruno Mars
9. Suit & Tie - Justin Timberlake featuring Jay-Z
10. Started From The Bottom - Drake
Hopefully this will result in everyone putting their best efforts in making great videos!
