But language isn't the only thing that needs to change. Asian pop tends to be a bit more.....hyperactive overall. And the boy/girl bands are well-oiled machines that are very polished compared to the boy bands that have recently crossed over here. I don't think 1D would be doing as well now if they were five dance machines without much individual personality.

Great. Now who's going to watch Sunday Rose on SAG night??

And a lot of K-pop and J-pop acts have already created English-language songs and albums, haven't they? That industry is just a different beast.

Hey, I'm just quoting an article about the industry thinking differently. If it were up to me, it would never happen. One Michel Teló polluting the airwaves for months is more than enough for me.

J/K-Pop basically took the whole late-90s/early-00s bubblegum pop style/aesthetic and ran with it. It never became passe over there.

I think Rihanna's #1 to be remembered years from now are:

    -Umbrella
    -Only Girl
    -We Found Love
    -Rude Boy
    -Disturbia

LOL, "Disturbia" is already forgotten. I think "Umbrella" and "We Found Love" are the only ones that look like potential "classics" for now.

    LOL, not really?

Well they're ranked from most to least memorable so I do think Disturbia is next in line to be forgotten.

The majority of Rihanna's songs haven't aged well thus far.

Rihanna is so whatever -- Umbrella, We Found Love, Only Girl, fine. Everything else, total whatever.

Hard is my jam. Not gunna lie.

Best Rihanna songs, though: Umbrella, We Found Love, Don't Stop the Music. Those are the essentials for me.

ETA- I also have a HUUUUGE soft spot for "If I Never See Your Face Again." That's an awesome pop song. Such a shame Rih and Maroon 5 suck so much now.

"What's My Name?" is like the best Rihanna song. I think she has at least two undisputed classics. "Umbrella"defnitely and I think with time "We Found Love" will be. "Only Girl", "Love the Way You Lie", 'What's My Name?" and "Rude Boy" would be next in line.

    And by "revered" you mean...what?

Played in light rotation on adult contemporary stations?

You may easily find some of these other artists more talented that Rihanna (particularly Whitney's voice, !), but let's not act like their musical careers didn't primarily consist of having a string of hits that struck a chord with a particular generation of music fans. It's only with the benefit of time that they were able to obtain "legendary" status, largely because their subsequent career trajectories were so disappointing that you have to remember the good years with a heightened sense of nostalgia. Once Rihanna finds some way to waste it all away, or continues to do her same act for decade after decade until she's merely coasting on dance-able fumes (see: Madonna), we'll look back and wish for the gold old days of "Umbrella".

1.) Bankrupt small, independent distributor via massive Oscar campaign. Failing that, proceed to...
2.) Cash in King Kong residual checks to pay for FYC advertisements from Kinko's.
3.) To avoid getting sent straight to VOD, attach entire film as a "trailer" to another film people actually want to see. And then...
4.) Try to do it Lahti-style and win Academy Award for Best Short Film.
5.) Avoid telling a story that everyone already knows by adding exciting details and/or gratuitous editing.
    6. Carefully and patiently weather the wrath of film critics/the royal family/the tabloids/Diana-maniacs for trying to add said details. (Good luck!)
    7. Find all of the boxes with "August: Osage County" screeners and slip in self-made cam bootleg from premiere screening at Lowes...the hardware store.
(Not Loews, the movie theater -- too expensive!)
    8. Trick octogenarian Oscar voters into thinking that you are, in fact, a real princess. (Hey, it worked on Eva Marie Saint!)
    9. On Oscar night, have camera crews come to Nicole's house, Joan Crawford-style, so you can win and keep your day job.

The best Rihanna songs (from her #1s) are "Whats My Name?" "Rude Boy" and "We Found Love" in that order. The others range from fun to dumb.

I love Janet, but I don't think she has any ageless, ubiquitous hits like Madonna, Whitney, or Mariah. Rihanna will at least have "Umbrella" as an enduring classic.

And, for better or for (much) worse, there's always the Super Bowl. That incident really seemed to redefine her career in basically the most negative way possible. But we'll always have:

Gurl, I love the whole Janet catalogue. I just don't think her hits are remembered as well as the other double digit number 1 divas we've mentioned in the thread. I can't remember the last time I heard anything from her on the radio.

    You're probably right.

I could watch her 1980's music videos all day long, though:

When I Think Of You still gets airplay. That's about it.
