Downton Abbey's 2-hour premiere last night got 7.9 million viewers. Viewership-wise that beat everything else in primetime with the exception of CBS in its timeslot. That's 96% more viewers than the season 2 premiere and 46% above the season 2 Christmas special, the previous series high.

I expected it to increase from last season since the hype has been stupid-high for it this season, but that's still a pretty incredible number (Even if it doesn't mean much to PBS). Could you imagine how big it would be if it aired the same day as the UK?

That's kind of amazing considering that a huge element of this season was spoiled a few weeks ago.

Yeah, I'm still pissed about how not-subtle a lot of publications have been about it. But it probably helps that most of its target audience doesn't frequent the kind of publications that would spoil it. My Mom knows nothing of it, for example.

I'm just glad I watched all of season 3 before the spoiler came out.

Apparently the switchboard of the network that airs it in Australia has it on their message service (they're getting a backlash and the season hasn't even aired here yet).

Fantastic ratings though for the show in US.

I wonder what the demo is like. The Good Wife got about 10 million viewers last night, yet its rating was yet another disappointing result for the show - 4th place by half a rating point.

With The Voice gone, its lead-out comedy hour showed its true flop colors.
The other networks didn't take advantage of this, as everything else continued to flop. Except NCIS.

Over on cable, the #1 original was my favorite guilty pleasure Pretty Little Liars with a 1.4 18-49 - very impressive for a show on ABC Family that's mostly for W18-34. About on par with a lot of the broadcast flops.

BBT hit another high - a 6.3. The last American Idol finale got a 6.4. Aside from the first trio of episodes introducing the new 2.5 Men Starring Ashton Kutcher, 2.5 Men hasn't hit a 6 in 8 years, when it had Everybody Loves Raymond as a lead-in.

Last night TBBT broke 20 million. This is beginning to remind me of how NCIS started hitting series highs 7-8 seasons into its run. it's doing just incredibly.

Scandal is beginning to do pretty well too, actually - it's holding over 80% of Grey's audience, the best any lead-out from Grey's has ever done, probably. Go Kerry Washington!

There seems to be a lot of groundswell support for Scandal. I'm not surprised.

Of course NCIS never even hit a 5 in the ratings, let alone 6's.

Scandal's first 6 episodes of its second season averaged just below a 2.0. So that whole Shooting storyline really, really increased awareness of the show. I wonder if it can maintain this when the shooting storyline's over - maybe those who came in for the omg factor realize they like the other stuff that's going on.

I think, more than the shooting storyline, the bump in ratings is due to Django Unchained. Kerry's been everywhere during the promo and has been very careful to always mention the show and compare Olivia to Broomhilda.

Whatever the reason I'm glad for the additional bump in ratings. It's a good show and it's nice to see that it looking strong for a third season.

Is there any real evidence that suggests spoilers negatively affect ratings? Actually curious. Whenever I've gotten spoiled on a show I always watch if anyway.

I'm not sure. I can't use myself since I ripped the show and watched the whole season before it aired and before the spoiler was revealed.

Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B have been pulled by ABC.

It was a bad idea anyway. Those comedies don't make any sense after Revenge on Sunday. They should have put Nashville there and added the second airings of Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B after Suburgatory. I just hope that Happy Endings gets a season four.

Yep Nashville would have been a better fit for sure. ABC are just doomed in that slot.

M: Lol that a Big Bang Theory rerun beat the top show of the other networks by 50% (and it also beat a new episode of another CBS sitcom).
Tu: The New Girl joins everything not named NCIS in the below-2 club. Uh, yay for fitting in? Fox is doing atrociously this year.

Tonight: the return of last season's #1 entertainment show. Will it go up thanks to Nicki-Mariah catfighting? Go down an reiterate what Britney on X Factor showed - celebrity judges don't mean anything if no one cares for the show?
Last season the show started at 7.4 (going down to 6.5 then 6.0 the next 2 Wednesdays). The first Thursday episode started at 5.7 - which is below, say, what Big Bang Theory got last week. But maybe Idol will put a dent in BBT's ratings - it didn't last season, when BBT beat Idol most weeks.

Crazy. I didn't realize Happy Endings was that much in danger of being cancelled. Ugh, I hope they renew!

In sad news, Lifetime cancelled their highly-rated series Drop Dead Diva. BOO THEM!
