I used to watch this show off and on when I was very young... and plan on revisiting since. I don't have a great memory of it.

"I'm a firm believer in karma, and I think this situation is a huge learning lesson for me.
To grow and expand as a spiritual human being. I want to lead a country one day for all I know".
Season 1 isn't bad at all, but rather just a solid starting point that doesn't reach the emotional, dramatic, and creative levels of future seasons. It lays some great groundwork and it does a fantastic job of introducing the main characters, but the show is just finding its footing. I think a lot of shows go through a similar growth period in their first season. Plus, Buffy had a mid-season start, so its first season is shorter than all the others (12 episodes instead of the 22 of each later season), which contributes to a briefer, quicker arc of course. I still like the Big Bad and think there are some fantastic episodes (Never Kill a Boy on the First Date and Prophecy Girl hint at the potential greatness ahead), but again, it's all just getting started.
Considering what follows, season 1 just doesn't stand much of a chance in the rankings. But all the seasons are great!
Season 1 is okaaay. Actually, it's a little bad in spots.
Fortunately, once you make your way through it, you can be sure the rest of the show will be much, much, MUCH better than the first season.
01. 2 Pretty much what Aaron Leggo said. Surprise/Innocence made me a big fan an Becoming is my favorite Buffy episode (with Hush and Once more with feeling very close)
02. 3 Most consistent Season I think, I hardly remember any filler episodes
03. 6 I love how everything is fucked and darker in this Season. It's like the main characters have grown up. Also, SpuffyAnd Once again with feeling

04. 5 Also a great Season. Actually 3,5,6 are pretty close.
05. 7 Although it has it flaws, I don't think it's as bad as people usually reviews it. The Ending was great and have other really awesome episodes such as Touched, Conversations with dead people, Storyteller, Lies My Parents told me, Selfless or Sleeper.
06. 4 Worst arc ever and most annoying Buffy love interest. Also worst Season Ending.
07. 1 It's funny but it has too many monster-of-the week episodes with cheap visual effects and characters still in development.
I still say people have only retroactively decided Season 1 was "badish" because they've compared it to what came afterwards. I think it's a terrific season of Buffy. Doesn't have the huge arc or depth but it's still way fun. Buffy set the bar so high later that we now make fun of stuff like the hyeana and praying mantis episodes but those eps are still way out there and hilarious and better than most tv. And considerably better than some of Season 7 that's for sure. The dialogue really snaps in the first season. There's something kinda light and airy about the proceedings as everyone is finding their bearings and the show is finding it's rhythms.
1. Season 3
2. Season 2
3. Season 4
4. Season 5
5. Season 6
6. Season 1
7. Season 7
Season 7 is still way better than Season 1.
I don't think I retroactively think Season 1 is just ok. I remember feeling there was something special about the show, yes, but that it was still a rather mixed bag. I actually struggled with a few episodes (especially "I Robot, You Jane").
Why is season 5 winning...? watch season two which have the best storyline of buffy or Season 3 which have the most good episodes...The zeppo, the wish, doppelgangland, lovers walk, earshoot, gratuation day. So why season five... glory is a good villian but best season...?
