I think there has been a general move to the middle on Bieber. All of his singles from 'Believe' have been very well-received and I don't think he's perceived as a total joke anymore. The album was warmly reviewed, too. I'd say he's got at least the same amount of respect as somebody like Katy Perry. I'm not saying I'd be a fan of the nomination, but I can see it happening.

fun. is a good bet. I wonder if they'll be content to just nominate "We Are Young" in Record and/or Song and leave an album slot to somebody else, though. I'm not sure fun. is going to nab 3 major nominations. Or wait, are they eligible for Best New Artist? I suppose they could be nominated in all 4 major categories, but I doubt it.

I'd love it if Fiona Apple could sneak into AOTY.

I don't think fun. is happening in album.

    I'm still sticking with:

    The Black Keys
    Mumford and Sons
    Drake
    Florence + the Machine
    Frank Ocean

    spoiler: Carrie Underwood

I am however considering how they readily embraced Skrillex last year, and something like Calvin Harris' 18 Months could sneak in as a surprise contender.

Reading Hitfix's article on the contenders in Best New Artist, and apparently Kendrick Lamar is eligible even though Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City isn't. Could be be a dark horse?

    God I hope so.

My five of Gotye/fun./One Direction/Carly Rae/Frank Ocean seems really solid though. Who would be the most vulnerable of that group?

I would say Carly Rae. Grammys don't usually nominate one-hit wonders like her.

Technically she's not a one-hit wonder because of Good Time.

My bad. Too bad those two kind of overlapped. Think Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ke$ha. They were all thought to be one-hit wonders and weren't nominated. Heck, even Katy had Hot N Cold and she still didn't get in.

I would say her or One Direction would be the ones to go from that five.

One Direction is in. They want/need ratings. They are huge. They will get nominated, but won't win. Justin Bieber, The Jonas Brothers, Backstreet Boys, etc. etc.

True. So I guess Carly Rae is the weak link in that five. Who would you have as the prime contenders to knock her out? Kendrick? Ellie Goulding? Lana del Rey?

I think all of the ones you just mentioned have a better a chance than Carly Rae. It's your pick. Don't forget about Miguel, Emeli Sande, Hunter Hayes, Ellie Varner, etc. This is actually a crowded category.

There's also Ed Sheeran, The Lumineers, Alabama Shakes, The Wanted (though they won't get in with One Direction there), Phillip Phillips, Imagine Dragons, Of Monsters and Men. It's tough for sure.

Yes! I had forgotten about Philip Phillips. I heard good things about his new album. Ed Sheeran making his way into America with the help of Taylor Swift! The Lumineers hitting the Top 10 in the Hot 100. Very tough category.

Kendrick Lamar must happen! Is Azealia Banks eligible?

Probably not. Her full album will be released in February. Expect her to be a big contender next year.

^ That's probably best for her. This year is kinda tight, with a lot of new artists making a splash critically/commercially.

Best New Artist is crazy crowded, with a bunch of fun choices.

I still think we'll get some out-of-left-field, crazy nomination (we usually do in this category). I think Frank Ocean, fun. and One Direction are pretty much locked. Gotye looks good and it'd be weird for him to miss with two general field nominations, but I could kind of see it happening. Kendrick Lamar would be awesome.

Of Monsters and Men or The Lumineers seem like a solid bet.

The Grammys almost always throw in one, sometimes maybe 2 Best New Artist contenders from other genres like jazz or blues, sometimes country, ect. It's never just the mainstream Popular music contenders. There's always somebody you've never heard of and sometimes they even win and sometimes they even deserve it (Esmeralda Spalding)

I don't think Goyte will make the cut. His seems to be a one-hit wonder. As of today, I see a fun./One Direction/Frank Ocean/Hunter Hayes (gotta have a country in here)/ and some rock act.
