We've all seen the pictures, but seeing him on screen is even more striking. The physical transformation is very impressive and the performance itself is very physical; the way he moves and walks. He also had number of emotional scenes that are easy Oscar clips. I really can't see him missing at all. The win, I'm not sure sure about just because I doubt this film will be a Best Picture nominee, but he's getting nominated. As for Jennifer Garner, she really didn't have much to do and even with the little that she had, I thought she was pretty bad. She's just kind of there smiling or looking worried. She does have one scene where she cries and smashes a wall in with a hammer, but it's pretty short. This character just lacks any kind of impact and unlike say Catherine Keener in Capote, she's not a previous nominee nor is she playing someone as famous as Harper Lee. For a first nomination, I think she would need a better character. I'm also sorry to disappoint some of you, but Jared Leto was really good. His character is every bit as baity as McConaughey's. He's completely gaunt, dressed in drag, drug addicted and he dies (considering he has AIDS in the 80s, I don't think this is much of a spoiler). The scenes between Leto and McConaughey are some of the best in the film. I don't know what to make of his Oscar chances. I doubt it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
