Dolby Systems debuting new sound system with the release of BRAVE

Dolby debuting new sound system with release of BRAVE

The company announced a new sound system Monday called Dolby Atmos, which can move sounds around a theater in an entirely new and realistic way. Rather than pushing the sound out from the left and right side of the theater, as happens in movies today, the new Atmos system will also deliver sound from above in a theater and will be able to swirl sound around in any direction.

List of cities/theaters getting the new system first:

    AMC Barrywoods 24
    Kansas City, MO, USA

    AMC Burbank 16
    Burbank, CA, USA

I haven't seen a movie at the Burbank AMC since I saw Spirited Away. Brave would be a fitting companion piece!

I read about this when the article was published in the Times and will be interested to hear the effects if and when Houston theaters install it. It would also be nice if theaters would maintain the sound systems they have; try explaining to some low level employee that the surround speakers aren't working (which happens more frequently than it should).

Sounds cool. I wonder how much of a difference I'll be able to notice when it comes to my city.

By the way, is it odd that we haven't heard anything about Brave yet? It opens in like 2 weeks!

Didn't this used to be called 'quadrophonic surround sound'?

And will this mean you need to sit in the center of the theater to get the fullest effect?

Everyone will adopt the Sheldon Cooper method of finding seats in the theater.

Don't most people angle for the center seats anyway?

It's probably not going to be that crucial as long as the sound effects aren't rendered too subtly.

Bullshit. They're building, like, a billion dollar Arclight in La Jolla and it's not going to have this? DON'T THEY KNOW MITT ROMNEY LIVES IN LA JOLLA?

While we're on the subject of speakers, when I first saw the trailer for "Snow White and the Huntsman", it sounded like a subwoofer had blown out--one of the speakers was making this awful noise as if it had been overloaded. Then the same thing happened with this trailer at a theater in another multiplex. I assume the effect was deliberate, but it sure was unpleasant.

Swirls around? LOL. I was not aware that was how sound works. Sounds gimmicky.

Not necessarily. Some people prefer the aisle seats. And anyway, choosing where to sit isn't always an option if the best seats are already taken.

I missed that one. However, if that horrible noise in the Prometheus trailer occurs even once in the movie, I don't want to see it.

If you're late enough to the show that all of the good seats are taken...you are not doing it right.
