Thread: Cannes 2012: The Jury's Out

    While initial reactions seem to be divided, some of the more major reviews are coming through; Guardian, HitFix, Indiewire, The Telegraph, Hollywood Reporter - all have been very positive.

    I think it's still early in the day, will have to wait until a day or two when all is said and done with R&B.

    In other news, I've been reading that Cotillard (alongside Tahar Rahim from A Prophet) are going to be in Asghar Farhardi's next, Paris-set film.

    Guardian review for Rust & Bone: "This is early days in the festival, but Rust and Bone has to be a real contender for prizes, and, the odds will be shortening to vanishing point for Cotillard getting the best actress award... its candour and force are matched by the commitment and intelligence of its two leading players. These factors, linked with the glowing sunlit images captured by cinematographer Stéphane Fontaine and emotion-grabbing music from Alexandre Desplat make for a powerful spectacle.     So definitely more positive than negative, and I think this could be in the 70s on Metacritic when all is said and done, but I still feel Cotillard's best bet will be for Low Life.

    The Time Out review gave it 2 out of 5 (according to that link). But Variety and THR were more positive than negative.

    Yeah the majority word is definitely possitive. 70's or even low 80's in Metacritic. While sometimes that's enough for a foreign language film in the American awards circuit, this doesn't come as the shock that La vie en rose was, and anyways even the most appreciative reviews seem to hold something back, so I don't know... I'd say this will be somewhat "passé" como awards time...

    ETA: And yeah djlaughs, those stars you've put after the quotes... Very bad. None of those are 5 stars reviews. Two are 4 out of five, and one is even 2 out of five. You cheater.

    Rust and Bone is probably the competition film that entered the festival with the strongest advance buzz. While the reviews appear to be largely positive, it probably hasn't lived up the hype. That said, I think it sounds really interesting. I love Audiard, but I haven't been a huge fan of his previous two films (despite A Prophet being his big breakthrough). This sounds a bit closer to Read My Lips, my favorite Audiard film, which was a perverse love story dressed up as a genre film. Very interesting to read that it was produced by the Dardenne brothers' production company.

    - Anderson: 7.59 (24 votes)
    - Audiard: 5.46 (7 votes)
    - Nasrallah: 4.21 (21 votes)

    Ok, Audiard is climbing up a little bit, and still many votes to be casted. Anyway, we have to consider that he's not the prototypical director for these guys' taste. Just keep in mind that A Prophet only got an average of 5.75 three years ago, so it's still a promising grade.

    Anderson's grade is really good. He would've been a top-3 competition film in last year's edition (trailing only Kaurismaki and the Dardenne brothers).

    I think Marion will win best actress at Cannes, but wont be nominated or if nominated at the oscars will not win.

    "The We and the I" is an abject failure, and the Director's Fortnight crowd that laughed the hardest at the hijinks on the ride -- French people of, let us be blunt, a certain advanced age -- were most assuredly laughing at the inner-city kids Gondry brought to the screen, not laughing with them.     On a more positive note,
    Michel Gondry’s slow-burner The We And The I is a film that needs an audience to stay through to the end, and while initially a little heavy-handed as it sets up its character-heavy format its strength comes as its young, inexperienced, cast make their impact on the film, with the closing scenes powerful and subtly moving.

    The film could perhaps be a little tighter – especially in the opening half hour as the varied characters jostle for screen time – but this bus journey is eventually worth the wait as relationships are revealed, attitudes change and real personalities unveiled.

    LOL, I'm glad that, even though I've always loved ESOTSM, I've also always quibbled at some of Gondry's directorial touches. Glad to see he's exposing himself as the fraud he is! The Science of Sleep was already abysmal, even though some of you pretended you had liked it.

    I don't think this is the type of film the televised awards will recognize, unfortunately.

    I was thinking the same, lol. The Mungiu and Isabelle Huppert x2 are tough competition for El Cotillard.
