Aww....you know I love you too. Didn't expect you to be so sweet. I also didn't mean to be so bitchy - obviously the very nature of this thread does call for some analysis of all the actors in the poll, however seeing it just become all about if Meryl Streep's career is good enough once again, is a bit annoying/overkill because we have had this conversation SO much recently. This very thread seems rather reductive, to be honest

    - I mean, on AD, did the original poster really expect all that much talk about Walter Brenans career? And even Nicholson and Bergman. Of course, it's all going to boil down to Streep and is she worthy. So, this does rather feel like a stealth thread to get people to debate Meryl career and whether she is Greer Garcon version 2.0 again.

But of course, if that's what the people want to talk about:

I'll just have to find a comfortable seat and deal with it as well, I guess. LOL

Walter Brennan's line-up is lackluster and he's a prime example of the Academy's tendency to nominate/award veterans in lieu of more deserving contenders.

Ingrid was all up-and-coming when she won her first one - Gaslight feels like heavy-handed spin on Rebecca. I find Bergman's character to be quite annoying and unsympathetic. Anastasia is a much better showcase of her talents, MOTOE is just inexcusable.

Nicholson's lineup is quite solid: Cuckoo is a classic; Terms of Endearment is deserving of it's acclaim and his chemistry with MacLaine felt genuine; As Good As It Gets is entertaining and he's the best part about it.

Streep provides arguably the best performance of these actors in Sophie's Choice. Kramer vs. Kramer hasn't aged well and her character feels very selfish nowadays (was it considered more of a women's lib victory back in the day for the mother to assume the "irresponsible parent" role?). The Iron Lady is standard biopic fare.

Hepburn has one awful win in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, but the others, especially The Lion in Winter, are worthy. Hepburn was my choice, on the strength of Lion (which I will watch if I happen to be channel surfing).

I haven't seen any of Brennen's wins, but I liked him in To Have and Have Not? LOL.

Bergman was serviceable in Gaslight and Murder on the Orient Express. While not my personal pick, I have no problem with either of those wins... though Stanwyck and Cortese should have won. Haven't seen Anastasia.

As for Hepburn, I don't know why so many people dislike Morning Glory? It's a fine film, and she was a deserving winner. She was masterful in The Lion in Winter, and I actually like her win for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, so suck it. Haven't seen On Golden Pond and I really don't care.

Love Nicholson in Cuckoo and Terms. Hate him in As Good as It Gets.

And LMAO at the Meryl Streep inclusion. She isn't winning, but... she's fine in Kramer (), great in Sophie (awful, awful movie though), and I turned off The Iron Lady after 30 mins, so yeah....

Hepburn by a mile. And yes, Hepburn's career > Streep's. It's not even a question.

Streep's great in Kramer, unequaled in Sophie, and impressive in TIL. It would be a deserving win. Oh, and Sophie's Choice isn't awful, it's just not great. I still remember the score, cinematography, and that red dress.

Haha - I'm not sure if that was directed toward me, but I you are right. I said Hepburn's performance in Guess was awful, but that's too strong. I do find it serviceable and not nearly as good as the competition from that year.

I get the feeling the Academy rewarded her for her long and prestigous career that night, which is just the sort of thing Meryl might benefit from this year.

It's okay. I think she was shocked too. I had to vote for her now though even if The Iron Lady isn't a Sophie's Choice or Kramer vs. Kramer, because I still feel that she was worthy of all her wins unlike the other choices.

Well, in just a few days it's going to be an actual race with Streep and Spielberg's 1st acting winner. I personally feel Daniel Day-Lewis's winning performances are grossly overrated, but he is someone who inspires passion and fervor among many including here, and...there are people who hate Iron Lady and everything about it.

    So right.
I would go with Nicholson. Really deserved first and third win, but Terms of Endearment was totally undeserved.
Big snubs for Chinatown and About Schmidt and I so so so loved him in The Pledge.

If we're going outside the wins themselves, I still think Hepburn owns Streep. I'll put Bringing Up Baby, Sylvia Scarlett, The Philadelphia Story, Suddenly Last Summer, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Summertime, The Lion In Winter, and Love Among The Ruins up against the best Streep has to offer.
I think that in general, people that win the Oscar for their "best" work tend to have only 1 or 2 nominations and only one Oscar win; most actors with multiple nominations and/or wins have not won for their best work, IMO. (Streep herself being an exception for Sophie's Choice)

As far as Steep vs Hepburn, I think that Hepburn had the better career overall (I mean, you don't even include The African Queen, Woman of the Year, Adam's Rib or Pat and Mike in your survey...) but Meryl wins in terms of the single better individual performance (Sophie's Choice), which still remains the top Streep screen performance, IMO.
