They should have waited until The Voice came back to launch this season, so the show could promote Jennifer Hudson and hopefully hang on to some Voice viewers. At this point, it will probably limp to the end of season 2 and be done.
I know this show is a mess, but for whatever reason I still enjoy it quite a bit. I have to say, though, that the end of the last episode was the worst cliff hanger of all time. Are we, the audience, really supposed to feel some stress over which script is going to move forward? We don't know much about either, and have no emotional connection at all.

So NBC just moved this to Saturday so it can have its slow and painful death. lol
It's kinda weird how this went from 11 million viewers/ most viewed drama in broadcast television to being dumped on a Saturday night.Poor NBC! Not even Spielberg could save it.
McPhee was the mistake. oh, yeah, and Messing. And Bombshell is an afterthought.
Tomorrow Tonight was pretty good.

As much critics hated on Katharine, it seems the majority of the fans of the show actually were all Team Karen over Team Ivy, hence the change in direction after the Pilot as to include more Karen scenes.
However, they did try to do too much at the same time. Too many dead end plots, too many characters, too many directions. It just didn't work.
It's so many bad and misguided things happening all at once it's hard to know where to start. I don't care about "Hitlist" at all after being so invested in "Bombshell" for an entire season. Jeremy Jordan's character is too insufferable. Katharine McPhee is a personality vacuum. Derek is aimless. Bringing back Tom's ex was weird (though he killed it in that Nat King Cole number). Sidelining Megan Hilty is unforgivable. You can tell the show hates Ivy (Team Karen! *gag*) for saddling her into Sean Hayes's awful storyline with "Liaisons." J-Hud's arc was pointless. At least last season's hate-watching served a purpose with so much that rightfully earned that level of scorn (ELLIS, Leo, Dev, Michael, etc.). Now the show's just boring, and that's somehow even worse. Safran's "reboot" for season 2 was nothing more than spring cleaning. It'll take more than removing bad characters and gawdy scarves to right this sinking ship. They've unfortunately earned their upcoming Saturday night exile.

I've seen very little of this show, but based on everything I've heard, it seems like this is a concept that would work much more successfully as a miniseries or an "American Horror Story" type anthology, focusing on a different cast and crew each season. The idea behind the show seems like something that needs a definite beginning and endpoint.

Not really, actually. In both seasons of Smash, there have been some great indications of how to do a workplace drama around this environment, sort of a West Wing of Broadway. And the success of other shows about this general milieu suggest that with better writing, it wouldn't have been all that difficult. The problem was just that West Wing had Aaron Sorkin and even Glee had Ryan Murphy, both writers with very particular points-of-view, who were willing to stand up to the network and do what they wanted. Smash never had that, so it got lost in a sea of network notes, showrunner indecision, and plotlines that didn't work.

Actually, the show was built to have Karen be the main character from the get-go, and NBC forced McPhee in there because they had a deal with her. Even if you think she's a good actress/singer (I don't), it was too much for her, too soon. Even if "the fans" were all Team Karen, it would have been useless, because the vast majority of filming was completed before the show even debuted.

Theresa Rebeck (the show creator) herself said the show wasn't going to be about Karen. It was just because that she had tested so well with early audiences that NBC forced her to add more of her. She even admitted that she didn't really know what to do with her at first - hence her dead end plots during Season 1 (karaoke scenes, Iowa, etc.).
I'm going to be so sad when this season ends. The show's toast, obviously.
It's my favorite campy, shitty, piece of garbage. God know everyone needs one!
BTW, can we talk about the of Kyle? I love how they the most bland and boring character on the show... and that's saying something! LOL at Debra Messing's insistence that they dim the lights on Broadway for him. Nobody knows who he is! Like, what? Also, I love how they tried to build him up as some talented, prospective legend of Broadway... when four episodes before they had the entire chorus saying how terrible his writing was. LMAO. Make up your mind!
And he fucked Christian Borle?! Why! Instead of making him a character that anyone gives a shit about, they waited until after he to give some "inspired" flashbacks.
But, OMG who is gonna win the Tony? Karen for Hit List? Ivy for Bombshell? I need to know!
