Ugh, cannot access the trailer. Anyway, we should be seeing Sundance reactions in a couple of hours.

A little OT, but I did not realize that Alice Englert is Jane Campion's daughter. Beautiful Creatures looks like a hideous movie, though.

    Come on, awards!

"It's also some of Moss' most intense and gripping work to date that will surely demonstrate she needs to be tapped for more lead drama roles."

Yes, because so far she's had 1 episode of Mad Men as a true lead. A rare borderline semi-lead episode here and there.

    From the Variety link:

From the hooligans (Jay Ryan, Kip Chapman) who carry out Mitcham's bidding to the sad-sack women who gather at GJ's camp, there's a pervasive sense of human lives either wasted or forced into familiar and depressing patterns. The wildness of the surroundings informs the wildness of the characters: Parents and children are forever at odds, and acts of violence and violation are distressingly commonplace, to the point where even Mitcham reacts to the news of Tui's ordeal not with outrage, but with a cynical roll of the eye ("She's a slut, like her dad was a slut!").
Moss, a long way from "Mad Men," brings a gripping combination of pluck, vulnerability and intense anger to the complicated role of a woman who fights for every inch of ground and at one point drives a broken bottle into a man's chest. Campion's films have long gone against the grain with their strong, embattled distaff protagonists and daring portrayals of female sexuality, and if "Top of the Lake" isn't in quite the same neighborhood as "In the Cut," it nonetheless calls on Moss and others to bare themselves physically and emotionally in a story located at the juncture of sex and violence.
Lol on the slut line. But that's reassuring to hear. Would have been very un-Campionesque if there was just violence, and no sex.

Does the this have US distribution yet? Sounds like an HBO miniseries. It's good to see Campion getting some work.

It will premiere on the Sundance Channel on March 18. This sucks because I don't have Sundance.

What a pity that the reviews so far didn't mention the ever gorgeous Lucy Lawless...maybe her role is quite small :/

I just realized that it would appear US audiences will get 2 days in a row of Moss for weeks on end, if Mad Men premieres around the same date as last year. I'm excited, especially with my #2 show Sherlock not airing this year at all.

You can download Episode 1 at iTunes for free over here.

I hope they make the successive episodes available for pay.

iTunes just took episode 1 down , but you can still easily find it leaked online obviously.

Luckily I downloaded it from iTunes in time!

I don't LOVE it so far, but it has a lot of potential. I was kinda afraid it would be like Mildred Pierce, where it felt like they thought every added minute to pad out the airing time would increase Winslet's awards chances.

Moss is great, of course, and is way more lead than in any episode of Mad Men not called The Suitcase. I'm intrigued to find out the hinted-at backstory.
The young girl at the center of the mystery is a far better actress than that Evan Rachel Wood, whose greatest talent is her beauty.
The old dude is appropriately malevolent, and his sons and Moss's ex (I'm guessing) are nice to look at.
And there are some pretty beautiful shots. I'm glad there's something must-see in March.

With all the local talent out there, it's a shame they had to cast Elizabeth Moss as an Australian. She makes a good effort, but her frequent lapses out of the accent are unfortunate.

    crikey!
    Movies recently reviewed by RRA:

    Star Trek (2009)
    Pain & Gain (2013)

    Jurassic Park III (2001)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

I don't mind her accent. She slips and can't pronounce her E's quite right but for the most part its not that intrusive. I've certainly heard worse.

Robyn Malcolm's American accent on the other hand (Yeah, her character so sounds like she's from Syracuse ) needs some work.

I'm more bothered that the lead character is Australian when the story, the characters, the setting are Kiwi. But that's Campion for ya.

Anyway, it's intriguing so far and Moss seems promising. Hunter's character is probably the most compelling. Gorgeous cinematography. Looking forward to the next one.

Elisabeth Moss is not the slightest bit believable as a detective or as an Australian, but then I never find her believable as anything.
