I think that Happy-Go-Lucky might even be Mike Leigh's best? And that's really saying something considering his filmography. But, to me, Happy-Go-Lucky is a beautiful, gentle film that says profound things about happiness. I really appreciate films where I can really feel and believe their depictions of happiness, because I think that that is harder to convincingly pull off than depictions of misery or depression. At first, Poppy seems like someone who is just happy, by default. It begs the question, "why is this girl so happy, no matter what? Is it her upbringing?" Nope, her sisters' mentalities are nothing like hers. "Is it because her life is perfect?" It isn't that, because as the film develops, we see that she's been dealt with some hard knocks. But every time that something goes wrong, she takes charge, and finds a way to turn that event into something constructive (i.e. her bike gets stolen, she sees it as the perfect opportunity to learn to drive). I think that Poppy makes a conscious decision and commitment to be happy. Instead of licking her wounds whenever you could never blame her for it, she chooses to stay positive and focus on what she loves about her life. She's in total control of her emotions, and her life, and that is so empowering. While she appears so juvenile on the surface, she actually has reached a level of maturity and emotional maturity that many never reach.

I also love that the obstacles that Poppy faces are things that aren't necessarily as life-shattering as, say, what happens to Vera Drake, they are little things that can still wreck your day, and together can make any person have a less than sunny disposition.

I altered the thread title to more accurately reflect the conversation, which has leaned heavily to snubs rather than the upsets themselves. I also moved it to Film Lists because camille is a whinypants.

And Happy-Go-Lucky is flawed, especially in the depiction of Scott...which was kind of gross.

    And Hathaway>>>>Hawkins, rather easily.

You're as gross as Anne Hathaway

LOL, I love how placing Hawkins at #5 on my ballot and not #1 has made me gross and deserving of a ban.1

Granted, I have only seen her film once so maybe I should check it out again

There's nothing ban-worthy with placing Hawkins at #5 on your ballot (although #1 is the only correct position! ), but saying Hathaway is better is just gross

I think that Wright was great. Its a haunting performance and one that really balances the film, if you ask me.

Well I really liked Wright too, and she would have made my personal ballot. But when I said OMG amazing, it just meant her loss/snub wouldn't be something a lot of people would be upset over, that's all.

Well, Breaking and Entering was a busted Oscar bait - that wasn't getting any nominations after it's tepid reaction despite the pedigree.

I guess some of these are who you felt deserved to be nominated? I always get confused with these threads because we all interpret them differently. As an Oscarwatcher, to me, 'upset' means Angelina Jolie missing out for A Mighty Heart after making all the precursors. But not Marion Cotiard for Nine - we all knew she could not get nominated in Lead for Nine and nobody was surprised when the nominations were announced. But, if by upset, you mean, like, an outcry that she wasn't nominated because she was great, then ok.

Fassbender was not an upset, except that he is an AD favourite who actually missed several precursors including SAG...

Jolie was a snub. Sally Hawkins had some passionate support, but since she missed SAG and BAFTA, it wasn't really a snub (although personally I thought she was robbed of a nom).

This year we could have Watts or Cotillard snubs. Or almost any of the lead actors...

    Lee Smith for Inception.

I can understand Nolan's snub considering the branch,or the majority of it,clearly doesn't like his work but Smith was a two-time nominee, won a lot of critics awards including BFCA and received nominations by the Bafta and ACE.Despite Nolan's snub, the film had 9 Bafta nominations(3 wins) including Best Picture and 8 Oscar nominations(4 wins) including Best Picture.

The fact that even enhances my bewilderment by the snub is that the majority of the reviews singled out the editing as what made the film what it was,a spectacle with a basic, solid script. It was probably it's most praised technical part along with Pfister's work.

    A genuine head scratcher.

Yeah, I thought that Film Editing was a lock right behind The Social Network...that snub was bizarre.

Evita was snubbed for Costume Design. And The Age of Innocence was snubbed for Cinematography (among the other biggies but Michael Ballhaus getting the shaft for a movie that was so praised for it's cinematography is strange)

Holy shit yes to both of these. Bizarre considering how many coffee table noms both of these got.

EVITA snubbed as it was surprised me. At the time I really thought Madonna would get an Oscar nod, and be another Hollywood celebrity with both Oscar and Razzie nods.

Hackman in The Conversation and The Royal Tenenbaums (well this to a lesser extent considering he failed to get an SAG Nomination).
