I hope it's a fake-out. Trying to redo THAT scene is just asking for trouble.

Otherwise I like it. The metallic CGI destruction through blue/grey filters does recall some of the staler CGI blockbusters of late, but I trust J.J. to not screw it up.

    I mean, Khan:

Awesome post, Hats. I think the first image is definitely a fake out. Surely, Abrams wouldn't be so stupid to try and replicate that scene/storyline? It would mean nothing to the new fans who just came on board for Abrams' version and it would only infuriate every other fan that recognizes that image.

I think option 2 makes way more sense. At this point, I'll be shocked if Cumberbatch is Khan/isn't Gary Mitchell .

Exactly. When that scene happens in Wrath of Khan, there are YEARS of emotional build up between Shatner's Kirk and Nimoy's Spock. The moment was devastating because of that history. It just wouldn't be the same for two characters who have only been interacting for one film, and hated each other for the majority of it. I'm guessing neither are in mortal danger during that moment. And I would be SHOCKED if Cumberbatch isn't Mitchell at this point, TBH.

Apparently it can't be Gary Mitchell because he already died in the comics or something and those are tied into the movie.

Well, Gary Mitchell turned into a near omnipotent being. I doubt death (or EU material) will dictate whether or not he's in this film.

    ETA: Just sayin:

Remember how people joked Abrams ripped off....I'm sorry, was inspired by SW for the first movie?

I guess he was "inspired" by Nolan for this one.

    (So was SKYFALL, but nevermind.)

~A sign that Nolan is a top director? Look at the people emulating him, for better or worse.

I saw The Hobbit in [LIE]MAX 3D in an Early Bird largely to see the 9-minute sneak peak of this. Non-spoilery thoughts - despite the darkness of the trailer, it looks like it'll still have the goofy fun of the first film, though where they cut off makes a case for being darker. And there's some ridiculousness in the scene that'll annoy hardcore Trekkies, but I didn't mind too much.

More specific thoughts/scene details (If you're OK with knowing what is probably one of the very first scenes of the film with no relation to the main plot you can click): After a one-minute scene with a grieving couple in a future-hospital in London that gets consoled by the MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH (Who says he can save their loved one), we cut to an already-in-progress away mission on a primitive planet wher Kirk and McCoy are being chased by a primitive bows-and-arrows-and-spears tribe while Spock tries to stop the volcano from erupting (This is the very red-planty planet that you see in the teaser-teaser). Apparently being exposed to the tribe will violate the Prime Directive (Which I immediately thought anyway), but stopping the volcano from destroying the planet won't violate it (Which I still don't get, but...OK). Though I'm guessing hardcore fans will have an even bigger issue with what comes after that shot of Kirk and McCoy jumping off the cliff...they jump off because THE ENTERPRISE IS SITTING IN THE WATER. ON PURPOSE. It's absolutely ridiculous, but an awesome reveal.

Meanwhile, Spock's mission to stop the volcano from erupting involves him being lowered into the volcano by cable-attached-to-shuttlecraft to do whatever scientific mumbo-jumbo will stop it. Alas, the cable breaks and the shuttlecraft can't hold up in the volcano and has to go. When Kirk gets back to the bridge him and the rest of the cast sans Spock is debating how to save Spock without exposing the Enterprise to the tribe. Spock determines that it's impossible, and that they must leave, noting that "the means of the many outweigh the needs of the few." He cuts it off as the crew is in shock, and then they show an assembly of quick cuts - most of which we've already seen, though there are a few new ones (Including one seriously badass shot of a man in a spacesuit flying through space debris.

Yeah it's become an annoying trend I think I can name 3 to 5 trailers in the last 2 years that used that (well 3 recently).
