Smile Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon starring in 'Mud'

Wow Matthew has been making some very interesting choices lately that most of us fans were not expecting. This sounds like another great movie he can be Oscar nominated for.

BREAKING: Take Shelter helmer Jeff Nichols has set Mud as his next film, and is in talks with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Tree of Life's Tye Sheridan to star.

Mud is a redemptive tale of a charismatic fugitive and his unlikely friendship with a 14-year-old kid who is determined to help Mud escape from the law and some tough bounty hunters so he can reunite with his soul mate Juniper (Witherspoon). Nichols wrote the script.

“Jeff Nichols has written a beautiful story with rich characters learning valuable lessons through life-changing circumstances. With Jeff’s vision, this will be a work of art,” says Everest Entertainment founder Falcone. “It’s an incredible script which Jeff, along with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Tye Sheridan, will bring to life. We’ve been privileged to work with incredible filmmakers like Danny Boyle, Tom McCarthy and Rodrigo Garcia and are thankful to add Jeff Nichols to that list.”

I'm sure Reese will drop out once she figures out this isn't a crappy rom com.

For every 10 films Reese signs onto, maybe 1-2 actually get made. We'll see.

I realize nobody here actually cares about this movie but it is filming in the small town in Arkansas I was born in and everyone is freaking out about it. I have got texts from every family member who lives there. It is such a redneck town and Hollywood has invaded it. It will never be the same.

EXCLUSIVE: Director Jeff Nichols has added his Take Shelter star Michael Shannon, Sam Shepard, Sarah Paulson, Ray McKinnon, Joe Don Baker and Paul Sparks to Mud, the drama that stars Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Tye Sheridan. Production began today in Arkansas. Scripted by Nichols and produced by Sarah Green, Everest Entertainment’s Lisa Maria Falcone and FilmNation’s Aaron Ryder, Mud is a coming-of-age drama centered on two 14-year-old boys who encounter a mysterious fugitive hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Intrigued by the man, the boys try to help him evade capture and reconnect with the love of his life. Nichols and Shannon are working together for the third time; besides Take Shelter, the Sundance and Cannes sensation that premieres September 30 through Sony Pictures Classics, they also worked together on Shotgun Stories.

I love Michael Shannon, I loved Shotgun Stories, I love Matthew McConaughey - so I'm excited for this project.

I like Reese Witherspoon though I haven't technically been on board for her since Legally Blonde/Election.

Apparently no, but for imdb she's still "romored"

I am glad Reese didn't "drop out", finally a decent movie. I am sure she will follow it with at least 10 shitty movies to make up for it.

    Smile First look at "Mud"

In case you haven't noticed, Matthew McConaughey is done being your buffed and tanned rom-com boy toy. Though he's still as handsome as ever, he's been putting his underrated acting skills first in a number of movies that have stepped away from the persona that made him famous. He led an unexpected box office hit earlier this year with "The Lincoln Lawyer," gives a memorable turn in Richard Linklater's upcoming "Bernie" and he will truly astonish everybody with his perverse performance in William Friedkin's amazingly wicked B-movie, "Killer Joe." Well, the actor is continuing his streak of Interesting Work against Easy Paydays, taking a role in "Take Shelter" director Jeff Nichols' next effort, "Mud." And even though it only started filming this fall, Empire has nabbed the first official look at the film.
Co-starring Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and "The Tree of Life" tyke Tye Sheridan, the film follows the story of an unlikely friendship between a fugitive (McConaughey) and a 14-year-old boy (Sheridan) who helps him escape off an island in Mississippi, evade the law and bounty hunters, and reunite him with his sweetheart Juniper (Witherspoon). Describing it as a "fairytale about love" and excitedly drawing a comparison to "Stand By Me," McConaughey talks about his character to the magazine in his own distinct way.

“Mud's a dreamer,” he explained. “He's an aristocrat of the heart. He's committed to this woman, and he's been committed to her since she was ten years old. They've gotten together probably 50 times and she's run off 50 times. He's like an old Labrador: waitin'. He knows that one day, hopefully, she'll come around to him. He loves her unconditionally and forever. And if this events in this story didn't happen, it would go on for another 40 years. He'd still be at her door, no matter how many times she hauled ass.”

Nichols is one of the most exciting voices in American cinema today ("Shotgun Stories" is a must see) and it once again looks like he's creating something wholly unique and original. We're pretty excited. No word yet on a release date, but could Cannes be in the equation for "Mud"? Maybe. "Take Shelter" played the Critic's Week sidebar last year, so it's not out of the question. But either way we'll likely see this sometime next year, and we can't wait.

When was the last time Matthew McConaughey was Oscar nominated?

I haven't followed any of his rom com flicks, but he was good back in Contact. But that was like forever ago.

I wasn't saying that he is already nominated, I was pointing out that is another Oscar bait project that he can be considered for. He is getting rave reviews for his stunning performance in "Killer Joe."

I was just joking with ya! :-)

Before I gave up on him, I was a bit upset with the promise he once showed. It would be good to see him actually try..

    Talking

    Two new clips.

So is Matthew McConaughey going to be the man of Cannes in 2012? The actor is already earning some serious buzz due to a recent string of roles that have seen him drop the shirtless rom-com act and man up for some juicy parts. He hits the Croisette with two movies in tow, Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy" (which we saw the first clip from this morning) and Jeff Nichols' "Mud." And it looks like again, he's delivering a helluva performance.
Co-starring Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and "The Tree of Life" tyke Tye Sheridan, the film which has been described as a "fairy tale," follows the story of an unlikely friendship between a fugitive (McConaughey) and a 14-year-old boy (Sheridan) who helps him escape off an island in Mississippi, evade the law and bounty hunters, so he can reunite with his sweetheart Juniper (Witherspoon). There is a lovely tone here, and an eerie use of music, which adds to the otherworldly nature of the story and as we said, McConaughey looks like once again, he's stepping firmly out of his established persona. Sheridan also looks solid as what seems to be the co-lead role and -- old punk rockers take note! -- that is a Fugazi t-shirt he's wearing. Btw, David Wingo who scored Nichols' rather awesome psychological impending-apocalypse drama, "Take Shelter," is scoring this one as well, not members of Lucero as once reported.

"Mud" premieres at the tail end of the festival on Saturday, May 26th.
