Why is that artsy fartsy? Do you not find long moving shots thrilling? Obviously the sequence in Children of Men is on point, but that sequence in the car is just filled with verve, as is the final run through Bexhill. But I have just finished HBO's The Pacific and was again completely exhilarated by the beach landing for that same reason. I'm not sure why this is elitist?

I love the car scene and part of why I love it is that it's one single shot, yes. I adore "Atonement" but I find the Dunkirk long take unnecessary, pointlessly showy and distracting. I think Theo Angelopoulos unnecesarily extended some takes in "Eternity and a day" but I love every long take in "Landscape in the Mist".

    Etc.

It depends on which long take, how it's used, why... I don't love long takes for the sake of it. "Length" is not a value in my book. Or in anybody's book.

And I said artsy-fartsy, not elitist. As in "people who have no idea of aesthetics think saying they like long takes gives them an aura of knowledge and refined taste that they actually probably lack".

Ok, fair enough. I can see what you mean, I'm just saying that I can still enjoy a "Dunkirk sequence" even if it may or may not work. For example, I'm not sure the long take in Hanna with Eric Bana actually foregrounds the film's point or distracts from it but I can enjoy it independent of the film. The long take at the end of Henry V is another of these. Obviously I'll appreciate them more if they marry well, if they are necessary and reinforced by the film itself, and not simply technical virtuosity, but skill can still be appreciated even if, in the end, its just showing off.

Also, are you really saying that my love of the long take is sign of a lack of taste and knowledge?

Well, many people seem to say they love films with long takes to... sound more knowledgeable of artsy film etc. It might or might not be your case.

I love filters!” Doesn’t it depend ALWAYS on which filter, how it’s used, its relation to the rest of the film, etc.?
I love long shots for a number of reasons (the technical complexities, the creative endeavour, the way they put us in the character's shoes by letting us inhabit their personal space for an extended amount of time, no edits in sight to truncate the connection), but obviously not all long shots are created equal. I’m not suggesting that all shots should be long or that all long shots are better than short ones or whatever, but it is a complicated, intriguing, and exciting filmmaking device that is generally employed by filmmakers interested in tackling a creative challenge.

And as for being baffled by the excitement over this particular bit of news, I think Kargo nails it:

So when you read something like ''Cuaron+Lubezki+Long Takes'' something inside your brain lights up,you remember those last 10 or so minutes from Children Of Men and declare yourself ecstatic about the potential of the new film.
Yeah, this entirely. The last Cuaron and Lubezki collaboration was spectacular and knowing that they’re approaching this next movie with a similar desire to create an immersive visual experience has me very excited. I have no idea how the long takes are going to be used, what they’re going to convey, how much sense the approach will make, etc., but I trust Cuaron and Lubezki aren’t just doing this for the hell of it. So in that sense, yes, it always boils down to the execution and the purpose of the shot and what it contributes (visually, physically, thematically, tonally, etc.) to the story, but I’m guessing that even with these lofty requirements, Cuaron and Lubezki will impress.

But your Jeunet comparison is pretty funny. True, too.

The first screening is tonight in Pasadena. I signed up, but I was put on a waiting list. I hope I will be able to see it.

Is anyone else around the area going to go?

    Thumbs up

FYI, I saw EL&IC early as well and admitted it was not a great movie, (I had problems with Thomas Horn ect) so why would I not be able to be objective and fair with this movie? Don't be ridiculous.

Hey. My friend has Red Dawn passes tonight (test screening), and obviously would rather see this instead. I sent him this and he was obviously put on the wait-list. How does that work, and does he still have a descent chance getting in?

Sometimes the screening will open up at the last minute because of people canceling their invites (you will get a notification through your email address if this happens) and have a short time to confirm your invite. That's what happened for me with EL&IC last year, fortunately I was by my computer when the screening opened up again. Good luck to your friend.

EDIT: FYI I was just notified via email that the screening has opened up again and I confirmed my invite. Tell your friend to check his email asap.

LOL, I love how clearwatergirl is the only poster on this site who puts a or a or a or whatever at the top of her posts to let everyone know her either happiness that someone else loves her beloved 'stars' or her disappointment in the fact that other people have 'taste'.

I really don't understand why you are always saying bad things about me and being a bully. Especially since I have been nothing but nice to you.
