This made me think how MUCH the Academy likes Sandra Bullock.
Crash's Best Pic win is the biggest upset ever in that category. And then, those out-of-nowhere nominations for The Blind Side and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
Gravity is happening!!!!
Leaving a screening of The Paperboy.
Ugh, some people are so lucky.
I want more Gravity news. MOAR!!
I agree that George Clooney can be nominated as well. He has a bigger part than I imagined based on what I heard about the script and was really funny in his scenes. He provided the comic relief of the movie. The audience was laughing all throughout the first half hour because of his character but he also had a heartbreaking scene as well. He and Sandra played off of each very well and I think he was the perfect casting for the role.
Sandra was amazing and I think this will be an easy nomination for her. After
George's character dies
she completely dominates the movie is alone on screen for the next hour and a half. As great as the directing and music was throughout, there is no way the movie could have worked so well if she wasn't up for the task. I don't think she has ever been more pyshical or vulnerable on screen and she did very well in the quiet, dialogue free moments. It's a great vehicle for her. There's a lot of long scenes towards the end where she's talking to herself... She has a monologue about being scared to die, she talks about praying and it's all very convincing and heartbreaking. She is in great shape for the movie as well and the director shoots a lot of close ups of her face mostly relying her ability to convince and engage the audience. A lot of the scenes are shot in a way that makes it so intense to watch. It's almost as if you're there with them.
My only complaint is that the effects were very rough (im sure this will be fixed), in the beginning the actors looked like cartoon characters. You could see strings attached to the actors, ect. I assume the beginning of the final cut will be very effects heavy because I could barely understand what was happening. The directing and acting were so good that they made the story compelling enough to watch even when the effects got cartoonish.
Also, it would've been nice to know more about Ryan. She mentions her daughter and says she's not married, but the movie doesn't give us much about her until the end, where she starts to fill in some of the blanks through her monologues.
Overall I thought it was a very suspenseful and engaging movie. Even with the extremely long takes it never dragged or became boring in my opinion.

Thanks!
Your review echoes those mini-reviews -- that the effects need to be tweaked, but overall, a very good film, with excellent direction and acting from Clooney and especially Bullock.
Based on what we know so far, and of course a measure of intuition, I have a feeling Bullock is gonna be nominated for this, as painful as that may sound. This seems like it could be a profound, perhaps divisive, film, but one that many will adore. Now, when you add to that a beloved A-list actress and previous Oscar winner headlining the film, I think it seems like a very strong possibility that Sandra is in. By comparison, The Tree of Life didn't have that one actor who was in every frame of the film (I guess McCracken was closest, but he was an unknown and a child), so with SaBu being the heart and soul of this film, then if it's great (Director, Picture?), I think she'll be rewarded along with it.
Bitches, I told ya'll that Bullock and Cuaron were going to be nominated for this!
Who CARES that Sandra Bullock is in it??? IT'S ALFONSO FUCKING CUARON!!!
and anyway, I'm willing to give Bullock a try. She was probably the only performance I actually liked in that Extremely Loud drek.
Hey, at least Bullock can have a nomination she actually deserves.
If she really is magnificent in this film. I think she can charm her way into another Oscar.

She is definitely in, I think. There are only a handful of non-romcom movies every year, where the woman is at the very centre of the film, and everything revolves around her. I think the academy is actually craving for a film like this. An intelligent scifi/ action film with a strong woman character. So if she doesn't screw it up completetey (which she doesn't seem to), this will be her 2nd nomination.
Unless J-Law gains momentum![]()
ha, I haven't been following any of the movies that are coming out this year, so I sort of shrugged off the movie when I got an invite over the phone for "the new sci-fi action film starring Sandra Bullock". I didn't realize it was this. I probably wouldn't have been able to go to it anyway, but oh well.

As more and more people start having sex with robots, it will become increasingly embarrassing to buy a can of WD-40.
How riveting is the story? What film(s) compare most closely to it, tonally and qualitywise?
