Well, Del Toro has confirmed on his official site that he'd "love to do" that film. We shall see.

Another big takeaway, though, if it's accurate, is that WB is head over heels for Pacific Rim, which is really exciting.

Guillermo del Toro was at the press conference for Rise of the Guardians at the Rome Film Fest today and I just had to ask him about the Vertigo project. He didn't say much but even just hearing him say "Yes, we're definitely considering making a Dark Universe movie" made me very, very happy.

    GDT adds more:

"[Heaven Sent] is a probability. But, see, the problem is that a lot of people get a hold of things before they are a reality. Like, for a while, people were talking about the "Dr. Strange" movie. I said, "I'm not involved. At all." And then they were talking about another movie and two or three times I had to say, "I'm not involved." In this case, I hope it happens."

Since we were on the subject of misogyny on this forum...

...this is something that should be read

This is James Gunn, who's writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy movie for Marvel. And who is, apparently, a sexist, homophobic asshole.

Some example of his exquisite writing

    13. Zatanna

I love how, over at Marvel, they try to make their Sorcerer Supreme as realistic as possible, by having him recite hundreds of complex spells from dozens of fictional arcane texts but, over at DC, with their sorceress-in-residence, they’re just like: She says shit backwards! Oh, and she wears a top hat. Whatever the case, guess what, Zatanna? Won uoy od mir sboj.
    17. Elektra

Another new debut. If you’re turned on by characters whose costume always seems to be blowing in extremely harsh winds when everyone around her seems perfectly still, then Elektra is your woman. Maybe she’s like carrying one of those little mini-fans, only a mini-fan who will give you a really terrific, Ninja-trained blow job.
    34. Batgirl – Stephanie Brown

Being a teen mom and all, you know she’s easy. Go for it.
    38. The Flash – Wally West

Many of the people who voted for the Flash were gay men. I have no idea why this is. But I do know if I was going to get fucked in the butt I too would want it to be by someone who would get it over with quick.
    Charming, right?

It's so disgusting I can't believe it actually exist.

The funny part? When he got called out on this bullshit he deleted the post. Of course Google Cache is your friend.

I hope a PR shitstorm hits Marvel and Disney because of this. Guardians of the Galaxy will not get my money.

In other news related to Guardians of the Galaxy, they're casting the lead, and a number of interesting actors have auditioned.

Obviously, the best choice is Lee Pace.

If he meant that to be satirical, he did a really shitty job of it.

Pretty much. Gunn is a satirist with a looooong history of making fun of superhero culture (back to The Specials in 2000, though that features a superhero who's a lesbian single mother who's a pretty straightforwardly heroic character, IIRC), and this specific article was in the run-up to Super, which is all about mocking this type of superhero culture and commentary. However here, he did a pretty shitty job of it (if that was his intent which, given his history, I'd guess it is), almost because it's sadly too accurate, in some circles.

That said, he does have a reasonable track record of writing genuinely interesting, complex female characters (the female characters in Slither and Ellen Page in Super come to mind).

I've read a couple of articles defending Gunn with that same argument. I get what they want to say. I know Gunn from his other works. Not as well as the woman who wrote that article, but I get what she's saying about his sense of humor.

    But:
1.His list was posted after a voting process that took time and had people voting and was never presented as an in-joke or satire of the comic book culture. People took him seriously (or as seriously as you can be when you're expressing your sexual preference for Wonder Woman or Batman) and when his list was posted he knew people expected to read it - and DID read it - as actual commentary. Snarky, maybe, but still not as something that was presented as satire from its conception. So even if he changed his mind and suddenly decided that he wanted to make a big joke out of it all, which is possible I guess, he should have been at least more tongue-in-cheek. All he ended up being was gross.

2.Even if the intent was satire he went too far, especially given that he knows perfectly well the kind of fans/audience he has. The people who were reading that list are the same people who say shit like that in their everyday lives. His writing doesn't even try to mock them, it just gives them what they want (believe me I read enough comic book related forums to know that Gunn's comment about Batwoman is made in a serious way pretty much daily by your average 20-something straight male comic book reader). So, if it is satire, it's not very good satire and sounds more like preaching to the choir rather than trying to let the choir know how off-key they are. It's like trying to make a point about homophobia by yelling at the Westboro Baptist Church that God hates fags.

Oh, I agree that, if satire was Gunn's intent here, he did a shitty job of it and should be called out. And it is genuinely disgusting that it DOES reflect a lot of genuine comic book commentary (comic book fans - by and large - are some of the worst people online, especially when it comes to gender and sexual politics). I'm just saying that there's an argument that Gunn's case is a little more complicated than him just being some total He-Man Woman Hater like, say, Tony Harris (because, seriously, fuck that guy). FilmCritHulk - as he often does - makes some very insightful points in the comments on the article about Gunn's career and the problems with the piece.
