“I actually think the way they should do the awards, I really think this, is they should give them out 10 years later… Like the way they do the Hall of Fame in Baseball. They do it in five years, but if you did 10 years later, if this year, we were voting on what was the best picture of 2000, I think it would be much more honest. It’s like, when you pick up great old movies and you go, why the hell didn’t Brando win the Oscar for this one? Who won that year? Whatever the sizzle was about that year. 50 years later you’re looking at a movie and going, this is a historic cinematic performance.” -Matt Damon

INOCA dates back to 2002, and did a 2001 retrospective not too long ago. If I offered to do all of the tabulations and what not, would anyone be interested in finishing off the aughts and doing awards for the year 2000? I think it would be a fun way to kill time around these forums. Just curious. I wouldn't want to do it if the participation would be at best minimal, so let me know.

Yes, 2009 was quite the movie year. Lots of hit movies coming unexpectedly and also Hollywood’s FIRST EVER $10 billion year! That’s right! This was the first year Hollywood made more than $10 billion at the North American box office. Interesting how in a year where a lot of businesses dried up or were plummeting, Hollywood was one that didn’t need to apply for a government bailout. Yep, there may have been some big flops but more often than not, Hollywood knows supply-and-demand and delivers consistently. In fact Bill Maher even pointed out Hollywood’s constant economic consistency for this year by stating: “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel made $400 million (worldwide). And that’s a squeakquel.”

As for how good the film year was, it was an interesting year as there were a lot of well-done movies in various genres.

One of the best sci-fi movies came not from Hollywood but South Africa. A movie about the Iraq war became the lowest-grossing Best Picture winner in 50 years. Four animated movies were amongst the darlings of critics. A $15,000 movie about a paramormal experience would be a huge hit. Harry Potter continues to grow. Avatar would first break a budget record and would then break all the box office records. Even an over-the-top comedy like The Hangover, a live-action family movie like Where The Wild Things Are and a sci-fi space movie like Star Trek were very well done. And then there's the Twilight sequel.

So in a salute to 2009, here’s my Top 10 of 2009.

NOTE TO TWI-HARDS: New Moon did NOT make the cut. And in a list where the prime deciders are directing, writing, acting and producing, why should it? :D

1) THE HURT LOCKER-This Iraq war story features many dramatic moments that keeps you at the edge of your seat and at the same time make a point about some people’s lust for danger.

2) PRECIOUS-What would normally be a film of unwatchable subject matter is a triumph of the soul. I believe Clarice Precious Jones is one of the best movie heroines of this new century.

3) INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS-Only Quentin Tarantino—the master basterd himself—can get away with this kind of Nazi revenge movie.

4) DISTRICT 9-This is not only rare that a movie about space aliens makes you think but also reminds you of the filmmaker’s nation’s dark side of history.

5) (500) DAYS OF SUMMER- An offbeat romantic comedy that tells as much about ourselves as it tells about the couple. As the tagline says: “This is not a love story. This is a story about love.”

6) THE HANGOVER-Whoever thought that a crazy comedy of this kind could be this good? Just remember to stay away from the roofies when in Vegas!

7) AVATAR-Yes, there’s cardboard characters and writing, but the sci-fi effects not only make up for it but mesmerize too. James Cameron strikes again as Hollywood’s top gambler!

8) WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE-For us kids who had wild imaginations, and paid the price with a lot of bullying, this movie is a salute to us!

9) THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX-A refreshing stop-motion alternative to 3D computerized animated movies is a fun adventure of Mr. Fox.

10) UP IN THE AIR-A romance that isn’t fluffy, doesn’t sugar coat and is not your typical predictable Hollywood romance.

HONORABLE MENTION:

-UP-Disney/Pixar does it again! Another winning animated movie from the twosome.

- AN EDUCATION-Interesting how a story of an English schoolgirl in the early 60’s who falls in love can be so relatable today. Carey Mulligan shines.

- THE WHITE RIBBON-This German film’s haunting feel and seemingly simple story line tells a lot about the root of all violence.

- A SINGLE MAN-What makes this movie is not only Colin Firth’s performance but you also feel his loss and his hurt.

- A SERIOUS MAN-From Single to Serious. An amusing comedy about losing faith and losing ideals at a time when almost everything can go wrong. And a ‘stoner mitzvah’ to boot!

BEST OF THE REST:

Best Popcorn Movie: STAR TREK-What could have been simply a remake or a revamped version of something done before ended up being great and impressed critics as much as it impressed the audience.

Best Animated Movie: UP-See above write-up.

Best Live-Action Family Movie: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE-See above write-up.

Best Foreign Film: THE WHITE RIBBON (Germany)-See above write-up.

Best Morally-Redeeming Movie: THE BLIND SIDE-Personally I thought it was often too simple and schmaltzy, but I find it refreshing to see a movie with a moral message actually get a Best Picture nomination.

Biggest Disappointment: TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN- I consider most Hollywood sequels to be money-grabbing fodder, but this drivel is “less than meets the eye”.

Favorite Movie I’m Ashamed To Admit I Like: THE HANGOVER-Admit it! Those idiots had us laughing nonstop!

So that sums up the best of 2009. Let's see what 2010 has to come. Also 2010 is en route to breaking 2009's box office record. So hang tight folks.

Personally, I can't stand either one of them, though from the things I've read on here I might like Cera more once I see Scott Pilgrim.

But these two young actors are essentially the same person. They both use their physical awkwardness/non-traditional looks to build "Geek" characters. Their characters talk rapidly when nervous, tend to throw out random pretentious facts about artsy subjects when around girls they like, cross their arms like that Molly Shannon character on SNL years ago, inexplicably become attractive to hot girls, etc. And at the end of their films, the Cera-senberg character is still a geek, but a wiser one, having tasted a little of life.

I liked both of them when their careers first started, because their schtick was fresh. Cera on Arrested Development was priceless. Eisenberg in Roger Dodger managed to hold his own against Campbell Scott's scene-chewing. But neither, to me, has ever advanced past those initial roles. Now, almost every actor hits a point where they simply have no more acting tricks to reveal to us - look at any of DeNiro's films of the last ten years and find something truly new that he did in them, for example. But good actors know to at least take different kinds of roles, even if their actual performances will not vary by that much. Clooney might always do Clooney, but his character in The American appears much different than the one in The Men Who Stare At Goats. My main problem is that Cera and Eisenberg aren't even trying to branch out. It's geek role, geek role, geek role, ad nauseum.

So which do you prefer, or like me, are you not a fan of either?
