:hmmm:
HBO has made a deal to develop the Oscar-nominated comedy The Kids Are All Right as an hour-long series. Lisa Cholodenko, who co-wrote and directed the Focus Features release, will write the pilot script. I’m told that it will continue the adventures of the five main characters. They were the same-sex partners (played in the film by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), their son and daughter (played by Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska) and the biological father of the kids/sperm donor who surfaces and tears the family apart (played by Mark Ruffalo in the film).

I actually think this would work pretty well on television, but I know they can't get the cast to come back.

Interesting. I agree that this might work pretty well as a TV show -- and I'm always a fan of healthy depictions of LGBT culture in mainstream entertainment

They should have asked Nicole Holofcener to do a TV show. I always thought her movies would work better as TV shows.

Holofcener is infinitely more interesting and talented than Cholodenko.
But I expect this to be a sitcom. New Adventures of Old Dykes.

This would be great if all the original cast members came back. So, no.

Quiet you, hoe! Annette has completed filming with auteurs of critical amd Oscar smash Little Miss Sunshine, is currently filming with auteurs of critical smash American Splendor and is preparing the splendiferous biopic in which she'll play Hemingway's wife Mary Welsh. That's three very true filmic projects that will keep her away from your TV screens and that will earn her Oscars #1, 2 and 3 respectively.
Julianne Moore can replay her character, though.

Hmm, Moore has six projects in development as well, two directed by Academy Award Nominees :deal:

Julianne Moore is Sarah Palin.

Phone me when they're completed or filming, like Annette's are!
The only completed thing Moore has is a TV movie about Palin, so shuddup.

I imagine the show will be centered around Mark Ruffalo's character thinking of increasingly wacky, convoluted plans to get back into the family's good graces, which will blow up in his face at the end of the season and force him to start over.

Um what? This is annoying because not true.
Moore has already completed filming THREE movies this year: an adaptation of the award winning novel "Another Night in Suck City" by Nick Flynn, directed by Academy Award Nominee Paul Weitz, co-starring Paul Dano and Robert De Niro; the much-anticipated HBO movie "Game Change" that you mentioned, directed by Emmy-award-winning director Jay Roach co-starring Ed Harris and Woody Harrelson; and the Henry-James-adaptation "What Maisie Knew", directed by "The Deep End" directors, co-starring Steve Coogan and Alexander Skarsgard.
She is about to start filming the indie comedy "The English Teacher" (in the title role) in the next weeks, co-starring Greg Kinnear and Nathan Lane, and after that she will star in the big budget fantasy film "The Seventh Son" for Warner Brothers, based on a best-selling book series, directed by an Academy Award nominee and co-starring Jeff Bridges.
In addition to all of that she's got at least five announced/ in-development projects.
She is incredibly busy, so no, I don't think she can replay her character.

OK then. :) I am just glad not all great actresses over 50 are forced to depart from the big screen and stick to TV. Hopefully both Bening and Moore will continue with great screen performances for many years to come.

Glenn Close will probably have a lot of free time after she loses her Oscar. Abbie Cornish can play Mia Wasikowska.
EDIT: Crap. I forgot about Damages coming back. Any other washed up film stars available? Kathleen Turner??

That's true, plus the rumored HBO miniseries by Todd Haynes, which could be terrific.
All in all, I feel Bening's projects sound better on paper, specially the Imogene role, she could nail that and get an Oscar for it.

In the meantime, Cholodenko is doing "a couple of things for HBO," including writing a pilot for the TV version of "The Kids Are All Right," which would act as both a prequel and a sequel for the Best Picture Nominee. Cholodenko hopes the concept will intrigue the original cast enough to reprise their roles. "You never know!" she said. "I'm just writing it as if they're going to do it, because that makes it easier to write it."
Granted, some of the cast might not be in the right age range anymore -- something Josh Hutcherson recently pointed out. Plus he might be a tad busy with "The Hunger Games" franchise, just as Mark Ruffalo might have too much work on his plate. "Nobody's offered me that yet," he told me recently. "I think I'd probably let someone else do that one at this point. But who knows? When that happens, I might want that job. But right now, I've got a full plate -- because of that. The sad irony is, I won't be able to do the HBO 'The Kids Are All Right' because the movie 'The Kids Are All Right' has made me unavailable!"
In response, Cholodenko said, laughing, "They're probably just anxious about reprising their roles! We'll see if somebody comes out of the woodwork to do it with me. If not, a new incarnation of it will be fun, too." While scripting the pilot, Cholodenko turned to her friend Holofcener for advice and feedback. "It's just very different writing episodic television," Cholodenko said, "and I was having a hard time."
I don't think that will happen though, with Ruffalo, Moore and Bening being having a lot of movies slated right now...

Well considering the first film doesn't actually conclude the story in a satisfying way that's somewhat interesting!

Not Ruffalo especially after last weekend.
