Pretty psyched that Steve Zahn gets a bigg-ish role in series TV. He's always been an undervalued actor.

So is this any good? All my Facebook friends in New Orleans are watching it.

I don't have HBO. :(

This was simply stellar.

I've seen the first three, and I'm pretty much in love with it, even more than I was with The Wire at this point. But, then, it's pretty much Nashville: The TV Show, so ...

Is there any way I can watch this without subscribing to HBO again?

Let it queue up fully while paused, then switch your browser to "offline". And watch without interruption. Or just wait about an hour after watching the first 45 minutes. Sometimes refreshing makes the wait time go down. I personally pay for the site, it's indispensable to me.

Yeah, this was pretty incredible. The second half was especially fantastic. The ensemble that they've assembled is pretty much flawless. The use of music was superb. Everything was great.

David Simon is pretty much a genius as far as I'm concerned.

He really is. I've read a bunch of interviews with him, seen him interviewed by Bill Maher and others, and every time I hear him, he comes off as being EXTREMELY intelligent, which isn't much of a surprise considering some of the work he's been responsible for.

I might have to live with the annoyance that is Steve Zhan's character, but I really liked this otherwise.

In some great news for the fantastic new series Treme, HBO has announced it has committed to a second season of the show. This, after only airing the debut episode of the first season this past Sunday.

This has probably been one of my favorite pilots in a long while... I can't wait for more.

Its ratings were decent; 1.4 million viewers. The Wire was averaging 890K per premiere by the last season.

It's been renewed for a second season already??

Fine with me.

Yeah, not really shocking, but the last two or three episodes of this were fucking amazing. When it was first announced, I always thought on paper Treme probably had the strongest cast on television, and this season confirmed that for me. After last week all I could think about was John Goodman and after last night it was all Melissa Leo, she was just tremendous, what a truly heartbreaking performance, the car scene alone was devastating, and then that brief smile while watching Alexander dancing at the end.

Loved the flashback, (usually hate them) it was implemented beautifully, and I don't know if it would have been as fitting and resonant anywhere else in this seasons timeline. Can't wait to see what they use and how this world expands in Season 2.

And is Davis the luckiest man ever?

Khandi Alexander is a force, that woman can do more with a look than most people can in a career. This is a show, like The Wire, that you just have to live in. It's about getting from point A to B in an episode or even in a season. It's an investment but it's always worth it.

I'm sad so many people were disappointed in this. I loved how there was no false melodrama. It's a very dramatic show, but it's not a show that relies on, like, big stuff happening.

Yet even when it did (I would say Clay's suicide is pretty big) it was just so...matter of fact. Same with the post-mortem of it. It was direct but not completely emotionally distant. It just didn't need the bells and whistles of a swelling violin score to make its point.

You're right Erik, Alexander was fantastic throughout this season, seriously a pause or tiny gesture says so much from her.

I agree, Cray's suicide was a big event, and Simon and company handle it so well, no falso sentimentality, it was shot perfectly. But it is emotionally satisfying because of how we progressively saw this character break throughout the season, the signs were clearly telegraphed early in the episode and now thinking back early in the season, which makes his flashback at the end even more disheartening.

Oh, and besides being great, I love this show because I now have a new fantasic playlist made on my ipod.

It's a shame that this thread didn't host regular conversations each week, the first season was spectacular. The final two episodes were marvelous, and I even really enjoyed observing the atmosphere that they created in the Mardi Gras episode.

If people called themselves David Simon fans after The Wire but didn't appreciate this, it's almost definitely because they were really into the police and crime story lines of past Simon projects. This takes just as honest of a look at the lives people live, and the culture of New Orleans is more than enough for me to keep coming back week after week.

Also, had The Wire ever done a flashback like this season of Treme did? I'm pretty sure they never did a dream sequence like LaDonna's in "Shallow Water, Oh Mama".
