Premieres this Thursday after The Office.
I just caught the pilot on Amazon of all places, i've heard some good things about it, and it was pretty great. Not too surprising with McHale, Chase, Jeong, and Oliver.

If Parks & Recreation has the same kind of sophomore improvement that The Office did, it will be the best night of TV by far. NBC comedies on Thursdays have been an institution since Cheers, but the lineup they have this season will probably be the highest quality.
I've also been wondering whether Ken Jeong will be a series regular or a guest star that they're smartly using in the promos. Anyone have any idea?

I don't think it's THAT bad...it reminds a little bit of Parks and Recreation in its first season; a show struggling for an identity that is intermittently funny. Though I don't think it's as good as that show was last season.
Also, I think it's getting a bit better as it goes on.
Absolutely hating this so far.

Not terribly funny tonight, I'm afraid.
Ken Jeong was easily the best part.
The Wise Up montage at the end didn't quite work as well as it should. I don't think it was earned enough to have any sort of poignancy.

I think it was supposed to be satirical of those sort of "poignant montages".
Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of it either. Jeong was indeed the best part, though I did think that Chase sold the desperation pretty well and he was funnier than in the pilot. I dunno. It didn't really work for me this week.

When I first saw this I thought it was better than the pilot (aside from the protest subplot). I still do, Chase is pretty great here.
hurricanesmith
09-25-2009, 04:10 PM
I think the protest subplot is structurally necessary. If Britta's too much of a good girl, Jeff's pursuit of her is ultimately hollow. If she, too, has her false persona, then the two are on more equal footing, and the will-they/won't-they will have wings to fly.

As someone that enjoyed the pilot, I thought this a lot of this was pretty weak, feeling kind of underdeveloped in areas. The two chicks in the group suddenly being super-activist types was annoyingly random, though you definitely encounter those kinds of contrasts in people at community colleges, i.e. people that believe activism can do anything vs. those that don't do much of anything despite complaining, so there was some poignancy to be found there, but it didn't feel developed enough to build into anything good.
The McHale/Chase pairing was also pretty disappointing.
Until the "Wise Up" montage.
Oh fuck, Sage is so right.
I was in tears.
TEARS.
Though for me I'd go back to the reveal of Marshall's fighting days in "The Fight" on HIMYM, but even this kind of beats that for managing to keep me guffawing for like, two minutes nonstop. That scene alone probably brought this up a whole letter grade for me.
Oh god, THE ROWING ON THE DESKS. :lmao:

The montage was the kind of cheap bit part the worst kind of comedies use. It was far too far-fetched for what the how had been doing before. I love the concept but the actual footage was weak and, easily, the easy way out.
I also find the show is not that funny. Half the jokes don't warrant a smirk and McHale's character is NOT endearing. No one else I know is very fond of it either. And I totally disagree about The Office's humanity. Community's humanity is plastic, forced and fake. The Office is human.

I think a better comparison is the humanity of the better Bill Murray comedies, like Groundhog Day. The main character -- an asshole -- is going to gradually be changed into a better man by the quirky oddballs surrounding him and the love of a good woman.
The show IS heavily dependent on liking Joel McHale and his screen persona.

But in Groundhog Day he's surrounded by other people who are likable. Here...not. Chase's character, for example, is such a lame type with no depth. As it everyone else. Even the likable ones are such types that there's nothing to grab on to. And the jokes are not funny enough to sustain such shallow characters. Arrested Development got around that by being funny but also having interesting characters with funny back stories. Here we either don't know them or they're boring.

Last night (and even last week's) episode were pretty funny. And yeah, the only thing I really don't like is the Jeff/Britta thing.. Not so much that there's a 'spark' between the two but that it's just too formulaic in a show that's trying not to seem so formulaic.

Abed is annoying. And not in a funny way.
I loved Jeff and Shirley's pairing. It will be nice to see the writers start pairing the characters off in new ways as the season goes on.

This episode, more than any so far, really took up mediocrity and had a sense of melancholy about it. I thought everything about it was abysmal. The storyline with Britta and the bathroom was so...bad. It was completely pointless and unnecessary for a show this young. I mean, really? That's the best character progression they could accomplish?
The president of the school is the WORST character on television. So obnoxious and annoying and over-the-top. So, so bad.
I won't even mention the Troy storyline, which almost made me turn the TV off.

The whole bathroom talk stuff was horrible though. So yeah, not horrible by any means but not an entirely great episode either.

The bathroom plot was pretty/really stupid, but the line "I've peed alone my entire life!" made me laugh in a goofy way.
And yeah, everything with Troy and Jeff interacting made me laugh.
Tonight should be interesting, Alan Sepinwall (One of the show's bigger fans) says it's the best yet, another critic says it's the worst. Hmmm.

That really was the best line of the episode, and I love Ken Jeong's Señor Chang (I also love how everyone pronounces it so that it sounds like 'senior'). I also loved Abed standing on top of the building, Batman style. The only character I'm iffy about is Shirley ("I'm supposed to be Harry Potter"), but I can look past that.

Absolutely right about Jack Black. I know his character was supposed to be annoying, but they could have let him just be Jack Black then . I hope the fact that he guest stars on a sitcom sgnals the beginning of the decline of an undeserved career.
Man, am I bitchy tonight!
Anyway, that storyline sorta brought the whole episode down, but there was still a lot of funny. That shot above and what it involved (even if that was part Jack Black) was very great.

Look on the brass balls on Dan Harmon. Seriously, having the guts to go for:
1) A relationship with a pretty decent-sized age gap
2) The pairing with the more interesting chemistry instead of what the fans might have demanded
Plus, I'm sort of sensing a creeping possibility that Britta will (at some point) end up with Abed. Look back at last week's episode--there are tiny little hints.
The Team Britta/Team Slater moment was great.
But the night's best visual gag easily goes to Troy and the giant cookie. "Con-trans-ulations"? :lmao:
Artimus

I thought the finale was fairly bland and arguably their weakest episode in a long time (they'd been on an incredible roll). The show still has trouble with Brita and the general lack of hot romance chemistry between her and Jeff. They feel so much like old friends it has never worked. The Annie/Jeff thing felt forced and inorganic, though they do have actual chemistry.
I guess it just wasn't that funny. The episode was uninspired and lacked the pow of their best. I'm shocked they didn't go for a more 80s teen movie vibe, but they're probably wise not to overplay the film spoof hand. Way too little Abed, too.
I've never bought this show's traditional sitcom machinations and the early episodes were weak because of that. The characters work because of their chemistry and sharpness and the kind of broad emotional moments rarely work outside of friendship themes. Basing an episode around some kind of heartfelt romance thing just didn't work (look at the amount of effort it took to make Jeff/Brita having sex work!).
Overall a very good season that improved shockingly fast with a mediocre finale.

Loved the last couple of episodes, especially the "Modern Warfare" episode. Happy about the season finale, and I'm so glad they gathered enough of a following for a second season.

If you're interested in this show, six of its best episodes started airing half an hour ago: "Contemporary American Poultry," "Romantic Expressionism," "Modern Warfare," "Physical Education," "Comparative Religion," and "Debate 109."
This Christmas episode is great.

LOL. I was emailed the press release for the panel by the event's PR people. I should probably RSVP for that!

Oh, hell. Really? Is that the next meme we're going to run into the ground?
At least the show will get an Emmy nomination now.

Nah, at this point she's really a general pop culture phenom. Whether she'll actually help ratings is questionable, but hey, there are far worse people to rely on to bring in ratings (Seinfeld, for one).
Well, I'm sure the writers on Community can actually give her good material, so that'll be nice.
